[file] Clues to Consider When Plagiarism is Suspected

[bullet] Is the student able to summarize the content or findings of the paper when asked?
[bullet] Does the assignment refer to other research that students would not be expected to read or be familiar with?
[bullet] Are the page and line breaks in odd places?
[bullet] Are most of the sources unavailable in Owens Library?
[bullet] Are there any strange words in the document such as "click here" or "graphic"?
[bullet] Is key information missing from the works cited, making it difficult to locate the student's sources?
[bullet] Are all of the sources several years old?
[bullet] Does the bibliography fail to match the parenthetical documentation or notes?
[bullet] Are the bibliography, references, or works cited missing?
[bullet] Does the writing level exceed the student's vocabulary and his/her expertise in the subject field?
[bullet] Does the content relate to, but not directly address, the topic assigned?
[bullet] Do parts of the paper seem to reflect different writing styles?
[bullet] Is the flow of information disjointed?

The search strategies described below will locate phrases in full-text periodical articles & abstracts:

ACM Portal
Enter a phrase enclosed in quotation marks in the "Search:" box
ACS Publications
a. Under "Full-Text Search," click the drop down arrow one of the boxes and click "Anywhere in article"
b. Type a phrase enclosed in quotation marks
Agricola
a. Click in the "Quick Searches:" entry box for either "Books" or "Articles"
b. Type a phrase

CQ Researcher
Click in the "Quick Search" box and type a phrase enclosed in quotation marks
EBSCOhost
In the initial (Basic) search screen:
a. Type a phrase enclosed in quotation marks in the box after the words "Find:"
b. Scroll down to the bottom of the page & click the check box in front of "also search within full text of the articles"
Gale
In Basic search, type your phrase and choose the "Full text" option
International Index to Music Periodicals
a. Click "SEARCH"
b. Click the button next to "Article citations with full text"
c. Type a phrase in the entry box next to "Keyword"
JSTOR
Click in the box and type a phrase enclosed in quotation marks
