Why Use Search Engines?
    Search Engines:
  • Search for unique keywords and phrases
  • Search for combinations of unique keywords
  • and phrases
  • Employ field searching and limiting (date, language, file type, location, etc.)
  • Search for pages buried deep in a Web site
    Search engines will not find:
  • Content of Adobe PDF and formatted files (except at AlltheWeb and Google which now index PDF and other file types)
  • Content in sites requiring a login (most periodical databases like InfoTrac or EBSCOhost; reference sources like Britannica.com or Countrywatch.com)
  • Information in commercial resources with domain limitations
  • Non-Web resources (printed books, printed government documents, print archives and rare manuscripts, and print/microform periodicals)
