Purpose of the Awards
The purpose of the Library Research Awards is to encourage critical thinking in undergraduate research papers or projects.

A Best Buy gift certificate (1st prize $200, 2nd prize $150, 3rd prize $100) will be awarded to the author of the top three papers or projects (group project winners will split a certificate).


Eligibility
  1. All applicants must be currently enrolled Northwest undergraduates.
  2. Eligible papers or projects must have been written for a 200 or higher level
    (for-credit) course during the 2009 Spring, Summer or Fall trimesters
  3. E-mail from course professor to Carolyn Johnson stating why the professor
    recommends the paper for the contest
  4. 8-20 pages (not counting bibliography pages), last name on each page
  5. Double-spaced, 1-inch margins, size 12 Times New Roman
  6. Consistent use of any citation style listed on Citing Sources
  7. All applicants entering the contest agree to contribute their papers or projects
    to a Library Research Award collection.

Evaluation Criteria
  • Extensive use of library sources (approximately 75%) from Owens Library
    databases or materials from the Owens Library in-house collection
    (sources obtained through MOBIUS or InterLibrary Loan are also acceptable)
  • Application of relevant information sources to topic
  • Demonstration of the ability to evaluate, analyze, and synthesize information sources
  • Responsible use of information by providing complete and accurate citations
Entries will be evaluated by a panel of librarians and professors.

Application Procedure
  1. Ask your professor to send a brief e-mail recommending your paper or project to
    Carolyn Johnson.
  2. Send an electronic version of your research paper or project to Carolyn Johnson.
    Suggestion: Check grammar, spelling, & citations before submitting your entry.
  3. Attach a 300-500 word document (double space, Times New Roman, font 12)
    to your e-mail message explaining how your paper or project meets the
    evaluation criteria.
  4. Submit a copyright release form at the Library Services Desk.

Deadline and Reception
  • The research paper or project, 300-500 word document, faculty recommendation and
    copyright release form must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
  • Applications received after 5 p.m. on March 3, 2010, will NOT be considered.
  • Award recipients and faculty sponsors will be honored at a reception in the library
    on April 13, 2010, at 3:30 p.m.
