Choose a Topic

Pick a topic from the Opposing Viewpoints Topic List. Then get your topic
approved by Frank or Carolyn.

Create a Search
Using the topic you have chosen, create a search statement using the Search Generator.

Find Your Sources
Use your search statement to locate:

  • One book or eBook located using the Library Catalog.
  • One journal article from the Opposing Viewpoints database.
    The article must have been published within the last five years.
  • One magazine or newspaper article from the Opposing Viewpoints database.
    The article must have been published within the last five years.
  • One essay from CQ Researcher published within the last five years, if possible.
  • One essay from FACTS.com

Develop a Presentation
Read and analyze sources to create:

  • Slide 1: Your topic and name
  • Slide 2: 1st main area
  • Slide 3: Pro/Con position (3 main points under each side)
  • Slide 4: 2nd main area
  • Slide 5: Pro/Con argument (3 main points under each side)
  • Slide 6: 3rd main area
  • Slide 7: Pro/Con argument (3 main points under each side)
  • Slide 8: Your opinion, based on your research

Schedule

Monday: 

Complete worksheet for 1 Library Catalog book

Complete worksheet for 1 Opposing Viewpoints journal article
Complete worksheet for 1 Opposing Viewpoints magazine or newspaper article

Tuesday:

View the CQ Researcher movie

Complete worksheet for 1 FACTS.com essay

Wednesday: 

Read sources.
Focus on three main areas of your topic.
Locate three arguments for (pro) and three arguments against (con) each area.

Thursday:

Decide which position you support, and why:

  • give examples
  • provide data such as statistics
  • cite valid authorities

Begin preparing your presentation for Friday.


Friday:

Finish preparing your presentation during the first part of class. 

During the second part, all students will deliver a 5-minute presentation.  Each presentation will be reviewed using the following criteria:

  • Are at least 5 sources cited?
  • Are at least 3 arguments supporting each pro and con position included?
  • Are the arguments presented in a clear manner?
  • Is the presentation interesting and appropriate?
  • Was the person’s opinion (either pro or con) convincing?

Presentation

All students will deliver a 5-minute presentation.  Each presentation will be evaluated by your classmates and the librarians using a scoring guide.
