Search for Books

Return to the Guide Introduction

Use a subject search if:
  • you find too many results. Subject searches can narrowly focus your search using a specific subject heading (example: use theater of the absurd rather than theater 20th century)
  • you find too few results. Subject searches can broaden your search using a more general subject heading (example: use theater England history instead of theater England 20th century history)
  • you find too many irrelevant results. Subject searches can eliminate irrelevant results from your keyword search (example: searching for Shakespeare William as a subject will retrieve only results that have William Shakespeare as the main subject rather than some of the results that a keyword search for Shakespeare that retrieves results that only mention Shakespeare briefly or are written by someone named Shakespeare who is not the Elizabethan poet and dramatist, William Shakespeare
If your search does not produce results in the Owens Library Catalog, you could try searching the Towers Catalog or the MOBIUS catalog (to search other college and university libraries in Missouri). To search for books in other libraries beyond Missouri, search WorldCat.

Use a keyword if:
  • you are unsure about what subject heading to use
  • you have tried a subject search and retrieved no results or irrelevant results
  • you are combining more than one idea or concept in a search:
example: Italy and theat* and renaissance (combines the concepts of a country or region, variants of the term theatre, and the concept of time period or era)
  • If your search does not produce results in the Owens Library Catalog, you could try searching the Towers Catalog or the MOBIUS catalog (to search other college and university libraries in Missouri). To search for books in other libraries beyond Missouri, search WorldCat. Use the keywords in the table of the guide introduction to supplement the keywords for searches in the library catalog.

      Search Examples Explanation
    Connectors
    19th or 20th
    s:theat* or s:drama*
    s:theat* and audience*
    musical* and united states
    (19th or 20th) and s:theat* and s:histor*
Use the connector OR to combine similar terms or synonyms. OR increases results.
Use AND to combine two or more distinct concepts, words, or phrases. AND decreases results.
Use parentheses to group words or phrases when using multiple OR connectors.
    Truncation
    theat*
    scen*
    drama*
    encyclop*dia*
    dictionar*
    perform*
    histor*
    critic*
Truncation allows you to search for word variants. For instance, theat* finds theater, theatre, theaters, and theatrical. encyclop*dia finds the words encyclopedia or encyclopedia. Use caution when truncating. Truncating too far up a word stem will retrieve unwanted results. Act* will not only find actor, actors, and acting but activate, activist, and actentuate.
    Fields
    s:theat* or s:drama*
    t:century of innovation
    a:findlay, Robert
Use field searches to more narrowly focus your search and reduce irrelevant results. For instance, using the keyword theater will find books about the performing arts theater but also books about the theater of war. s:theater focuses the search to only books about performing arts theater.
