Background Information: Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, and Handbooks
Use these sources to define terms and concepts in psychology and psychiatry. It is often useful to consult encyclopedias at the beginning of a research project to obtain a concise overview of a concept, school of thought, or a particular psychologist's contribution to the field.
Encyclopedia of Psychology
Oxford University Press and the American Psychological Association teamed to create a reference set which would "merge into one source the topics, methods, findings, advances, and applications that characterize the broad field of study" in psychology. The themes covered include psychology as a discipline, methods of scientific study, psychological testing, biological and cognitive processes, personal and social processes, interactive systems, development across the life span, cultural and cross-cultural psychology, adjustment and clinical dysfunction, and interventions.Encyclopedia of Psychology
Encyclopedia of Psychology provides subject access to the concepts and theories covering the entire field of psychology and is international in scope. It also gives access to an extensive list of biographies of eminent psychologists both living and dead. In essence, this encyclopedia serves as an advanced textbook on general psychology.

This encyclopedia is intended for students, professionals and general readers as a reference concerning various aspects of the central and rapidly changing institution of the family. It concentrates on the past and present of families in North America. This is a standard reference work covering all aspects of human behavior.

Encyclopedia of Associations
This is a comprehensive source of detailed information concerning 22,000 nonprofit American membership organizations of national scope. This includes organizations in the psychology and psychiatry fields and related mental health disciplines.
Foundation Directory
This directory lists and describes the private and community grant making foundations in the United States. In the subject index, there are headings for psychiatry, psychology, and mental health.

Comprehensive Dissertation Index
This resource includes citations for most doctoral dissertations accepted in North America since 1861. It is an annual accumulation that indexes Dissertation Abstracts International by subject.
Dissertation Abstracts International
This index is a monthly compilation of abstracts or summaries of dissertations submitted to Bell & Howell Information and Learning by more than 500 international institutions. Author, keyword, and subject indexing are available for Dissertation Abstracts International. Request an online search for dissertations from 1993 to the present at the Library Services Desk.
With these sources, determine what tests are available for measuring particular attributes and age groups, locate evaluations of tests, and obtain ordering information for those that are currently in print.
ETS Test Collection Catalog
This set includes both unpublished research instruments and commercially-available tests and questionnaires owned by the test collection of the Educational Testing Service. Search for tests available in the ETS collection by using the ETS Test File locator.
Mental Measurements Yearbook
This series contains the most extensive coverage of published standardized tests commercially available in the English-speaking world. There is a guide to the use of this set located in the Reference area. To search for tests listed in Mental Measurements Yearbook use the ERIC/AE Test Locator.
Test Critiques
This set produces one volume a year containing approximately 100 test reviews annually. The indexing is not as extensive as Mental Measurements Yearbook, and the reviews are not as descriptive. To ensure complete coverage of any one test, consult both sources. To search for tests listed in Test Critiques use the ERIC/AE Test Locator.
These sources will provide guidance in conducting library or field research, in presenting papers and reports for class and in publishing research findings.
