Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

GiS Timeline
"The aim of our GiS TiMELiNE is to present a visual overview of key historical events in the development and growth of Geographical Information Systems from their conception in the 1960's to the present day."

Geospatial Solutions
"Geospatial Solutions helps people benefit from GIs and related technologies by providing solutions-based case studies, technical tutorials, policy updates, news, and new product information." This site is an online magazine, and while you need to subscribe for most of its services, it provides access to some valuable articles in the Recent Issues section and links to an article index, buyer's guide, and employment opportunities in the Resources Center section.

Geographic Information Systems
"Geographic information systems (GIs) technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. For example, a GIs might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster, or a GIs might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution."

The Bureau of Land Management - Geospatial Information Center
"This directory contains a miscellaneous collection of GIs utilities and some data files. The executable programs are in EXE (DOS/Windows) format. Included is a PC version of the public-domain GIs program MOSS (Map Overlay and Statistical System.). The programs were contributed by various parties and are in varying states of development."

Geographic Name Servers

GEOnet Names Server
"The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the US Board on Geographic Names (US BGN). Approximately 20,000 of the database's features are updated monthly." The National Imagery and Mapping Agency sponsors this site. Additional links to sites addressing geospatial information can also be found on this page.

Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names On Line
"The TGN (The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names) is a structured, world-coverage vocabulary of 1.3 million names, including vernacular and historical names, coordinates, and place types, and descriptive notes, focusing on places important for the study of art and architecture." The Getty Center offers a searchable index, with nearly 1 million place names.

US Geographic Names Information Systems
"The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the US Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic names information. Information about foreign geographic feature names can be obtained from the GEOnet Names Server, developed and maintained by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency."
