Connect to the ERIC database:
  • From the Owens Library Home Page, click Search for Articles
  • Click E
  • Click ERIC (If necessary, scroll down until you see ERIC)

Look for articles on your topic:
ERIC
  • Click [Basic Search]
  • Click in the Find: box and type in your search statement including Boolean operators (and, or, not)
    SAMPLE SEARCH: character education and curriculum
  • Enclose synonyms in parentheses and connect them with the Boolean operator "or"
    SAMPLE SEARCH: (character education or values education) and (curriculum or lesson plans)
  • If you want variant endings for a word, use the wild card *
    SAMPLE SEARCH: character education and curricul* and teach* and method*
                                         curricul* retrieves curriculum or curricular
                                         teach* retrieves teaching or teacher
                                         method* retrieves method or methods or methodology
  • Click [ Search Button ] to view a list of articles

Search by subject:
ERIC
  • Click [Thesaurus] in the top bar
  • Click in the Browse for: box and type your subject
  • Click [Browse Button]
  • Once you have identified the subject you would like to search, click the check box next to the subject & then click [Add Button] to add the subject to your search
  • Type any other terms you wish to add to the search in the Find: box
  • Click [Search Button] to view a list of articles

Limit a search to a specific journal:
EXAMPLE: You want to find articles only in the Journal of Learning Disabilities
ERIC
  • In either [Basic Search] or [Advanced Search], enter your search statement
    SAMPLE SEARCH: learning disabilit* and cause*
  • Scroll down until you see the Journal Name box
  • Type the full title of the journal (for example: Journal of Learning Disabilities)
  • Click [Search Button] to view a list of articles

Find articles in a specific journal about a specific topic:
EXAMPLE: You want to find articles in the journal Educational Leadership
about year round schools
ERIC
  • In either [Basic Search] or [Advanced Search], enter your search statement
    SAMPLE SEARCH: year round schools
  • Scroll down until you see the Journal Name box
  • Type the full title of the journal (for example: Educational Leadership)
  • Click [Search Button] to view a list of articles

Return to Top

Retrieve only journal articles or only ERIC documents:
ERIC
  • In either [Basic Search] or [Advanced Search], enter your search statement
    SAMPLE SEARCH: year round schools
  • Scroll down until you see the Journal or Document scroll box
  • Click Documents or Journal Articles
  • Scroll up and click [Search Button] to view a list of articles
