Types of Databases

The two types of databases that you will be using are: library catalog and article indexes.

Library catalogs

[ Library Catalog ]

organize all of the materials a library purchases. These include records for books, magazines, journals, newspapers, government documents, videos, sound recordings, etc.

The library catalog does not include articles.

Article indexes are used to identify articles on a topic.

[ InfoTrac ]

Some article indexes such as Gale - Academic OneFile or EBSCOhost - Academic Search are general or multidisciplinary.
[ International Index to Music Periodicals ] Many indexes specialize in a particular subject area, such as music, biology, education, government, or business.
