A publication of the United States Department of Agriculture and the National
Agricultural Statistics Service that includes a census of the United States
and each State separately. Maps, figures, and tables of state data and county
data are provided.

States
Detailed information is provided regarding each of the 50 states: population;

vital statistics and health; education; social insurance and welfare programs;
housing and construction; government and elections; governmental finance;
crime, law enforcement and courts; labor and income; economy, business, industry
and agriculture; and communication, energy and transportation. At the end
of the book are comparative tables that rank the states on over 50 variables.

This handbook "provides official state-certified election returns for
governors, U.S. Senators and US representatives in the 1997-1998 election
cycle. General election returns, registration data, and vote percentages and
pluralities are provided county by county; primary election returns and percentages
are summarized for each state." Also included are state profiles that
"list the current governor, US senators and US representatives and contain
the current congressional district map. Statewide vote tables for president,
governors and US senators from 1945 to the present offer a unique historical
perspective for state voting patterns. National summary tables on the 1997-1998
