Directions for off-campus access

Hint: Search for the name of the person you are researching. Enter the person's last name and then first name. Narrow results by adding the word biography to your search.

[ books ] Use general encyclopedias to locate brief biographical information about individuals.

General encyclopedias are available in paper format in the Reference collection on first floor of the library or online as described below:

  • Click on EBSCOhost.

[ computer ] Use the library catalog to locate books about the individual.

  • Connect to the Owens Library Web Page.
  • Click on Library Catalog.
  • Click on subject.
  • You may also choose to search by the person's name or for subject headings such as biography, united states biography, or religious biography.

NOTE: Owens Library does not have all of the sources listed in the print index.


Look up the name of the individual to find citations under each entry. The citation provides abbreviations for the titles of biographical reference sources. A list of the complete titles of these sources is on the inside cover of each of the three volumes or is available online at Abridged Biography and Genealogy Master Index.


[ books ] Use periodical indexes to locate articles about the person. Use print indexes to locate periodical articles prior to 1980. Several suggested titles are:

Article abstracts and bibliographical citations of reviews and dissertations on the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present are included in this index.

This index is a guide to biographical materials appearing in periodicals, as well as current books of individual and collective biography. Biographical material indexed includes obituaries, collections of letters, diaries, memoirs, juvenile literature, book reviews, and bibliographies. All biographies are American unless otherwise indicated.

This reference work provides citations for magazine articles, newspaper articles, and books concerning more than 15,000 Black individuals and groups.

Date varies by from 1800's to the last few years.

They cover the time period from approximately 1980 to the present. More articles are available in recent years in these indexes than in the early years. It is important to check print indexes (like those listed above) for comprehensive retrospective coverage. To connect to InfoTrac or EBSCOhost:

  • In the "Databases" box, scroll down and click InfoTrac or EBSCOhost
  • Click on One File in InfoTrac or Academic Search Premier in EBSCOhost.
  • Search for the name of the person you are researching.
  • It is possible in InfoTrac and EBSCOhost to search for articles in Current Biography, one of the premier sources for biography of people who are alive or recently deceased. To do this, follow the steps listed above and type Current Biography in the limit "to the following journal" box.
