Proceedings Guidelines
- Review the submission checklist and submit the paper by e-mail
in a document attachment to: Kathy Ferguson at juliah@nwmissouri.edu
- Your paper must be received by July 27,2009 at 5:00 p.m.
- Submit only original, unpublished work.
- Follow MLA style (7th Edition) with one exception--single space
the entries. Follow examples at: MLA
Citation Style Examples or
consult the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers—7th
Edition. Cite all full text (online) articles following the guidelines
provided at the hyperlink above.
- Divide the paper into sections that reflect content (e.g., –-but
not limited to--introduction, review of literature, findings, conclusions—your
sections will be unique to your paper). Center and bold section headings.
Papers should be 1,750 to 4,500 words in length.
(Word count includes references and tables. It does
not include your abstract. Do not include your abstract in the
paper you send in. We already have the abstract you submitted for
your presentation.)
- Use Microsoft Word or save in rich text format.
- 1-inch margins.
- Single space paragraphs and double space between paragraphs.
- Do not indent paragraphs.
- Format the title of your paper, the author(s) names, position, and institution as shown in the example below:

- Use Times New Roman, size 12 font.
- Do not include appendices. Use tables or figures to display information.
- Use black & white tables & graphics. Label graphics & tables
as explained in section 4.5 of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research
Papers—7th Edition.
- List the titles of figures to read Fig. 16 instead
of Figure 16. A good example is provided on page 150 of the MLA
Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed. When referring
to figures in the text of the paper, instead of stating, “Figure
3 shows the search results”, write “See fig. 3 for research
results.” Page 150 also provides an example of this type of
statement.
- Italicize the titles of computer programs.
- Don’t capitalize the word chapter when
referring to chapters of a work. See page 92, section 3.6.5 Exceptions
of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed. Format
the titles of book chapters by enclosing them in quotation marks
(see section 3.6.3 Titles in Quotation Marks).
- List authors and titles of Web sites in the text
of papers. Include a citation for the Web site in the Works Cited
list. There is no need to include the URL. Refer to section 5.6
CITING WEB PUBLICATIONS (pp. 181-184) of the MLA Handbook for
Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed.
- Don’t list URLs in the text of the paper
in parentheses. Either mention the title of the Web site
in the text of the paper or parenthetically cite the Web site using
the author or title. Then include a Works Cited entry following
the guidelines in section 5.6 CITING WEB PUBLICATIONS (pp. 181-184)
of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th
ed.
- Read sections 3.5.2 through 3.5.4 about numbers and percentages.
These sections provide some important distinctions about when to
spell out numbers and when to use numerals.
- If there are two or three authors in parenthetical
reference, list the authors’ last names. If there are more
than three authors, use et al. (See section 6.2 of the MLA
Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed.).
- Section 5.5.21of
the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers,
7th ed. explains how to cite the proceedings of
a conference.
- For scholarly journals, list only the
year for
date.
