Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS)
"The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences is the most rapidly growing professional organization in the scholarly fields of criminal justice education, research, and policy analysis. The objectives of ACJS have been to promote scholarly and professional activities within the discipline of criminal justice and to aid in the employment and research interests of past, present, and future educators and practitioners." American Sociological Association
(ASA)
"The American Sociological Association (ASA), founded in 1905, is a nonprofit membership association dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline and profession serving the public good." There are resources on this page available for sociology professionals, students, and for the general public. Student resources include a Student Forum, ASA Honor Program, a listing of Data Resources, and Research Support.

International Sociological Association (ISA)
"The ISA was founded in 1949 under the auspices of UNESCO. The goal of the Association, as stated in the Statutes, is to represent sociologists everywhere, regardless of their school of thought, scientific approaches or ideological opinion, and to advance sociological knowledge throughout the world." Midwest Sociological Society
"The Midwest Sociological Society, founded in 1936, is a professional organization of academic and applied sociologists as well as students of the discipline." The site is maintained by Drake University. Read more with the About MSS link. Links to professional resources and the publications of the society are available on this site.

Mid-South Sociological Association (MSSA)
"The MSSA was chartered by academics teaching in Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee in 1973 in an effort to create a more collegial professional association. While the membership roster includes professional sociologists from the all over the country, most members were initiated by their mentors while graduate students. Specialization's include all aspects of the discipline. Members are listed on the Web site by affiliation and specialization." North Central Sociological Association
"The objectives of the NCSA are to further the development of sociology as a scientific and scholarly discipline through stimulation and promotion of scientific research in its defined subject matter area, effective teaching of the subject matter at all levels of educational endeavor, the widest possible and feasible utilization of the knowledge and skills of sociologists and the findings of scientific sociological research by public and private agencies in all relevant social policy issues, interchange and cooperative relations among persons and organizations engaged in the scientific study of society and all such other acts as may be deemed conductive to these ends."

Rural Sociological Society
"The Rural Sociological Society (RSS) was founded in 1937 in order to promote the development of rural sociology through teaching, research and extension. Its original members were active as early as 1920 as a section of the American Sociological Society." Social Watch
Social Watch is "an international citizens" coalition monitoring implementation of the world governments' commitments to eradicate poverty and achieve gender equity". From this site connect to Social Watch's Thematic Reports reports on poverty eradication, full employment, social integration, education, gender, health and structural adjustments. Country reports are also available at this site.

Society for Applied Sociology (SAS)
The Society for Applied Sociology, founded in 1978, exists to: "provide a forum for sociologists and others interested in applying sociological knowledge. To enhance understanding of the interrelationship between sociological knowledge and sociological practice. To increase the effectiveness of applied sociological research and training." Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP)
"SSSP members are an interdisciplinary community of scholars, practitioners, advocates, and students interested in the application of critical, scientific, and humanistic perspectives to the study of vital social problems." American Sociological Association -- Careers
This page answers the question, "What can I do with a degree in sociology?" It has pertinent information about career preparation, graduate training and what sorts of career opportunities are available for sociology graduates with a BA degree, MA or PhD. In addition, the page looks into the future to discuss the possible changes that are to be expected in the field and how sociology students should prepare for those changes.

A Sociological Tour Through Cyberspace
This site is created and maintained by Dr. Michael Kearl, faculty member on the Anthropology and Sociology department of Trinity University. The stated aim of the page is to "Feature commentary, data analyses, occasional essays, as well as the requisite links, put together for courses..." SocioSite
SocioSite is "designed to get access to information and resources which are relevant for sociologists and other social scientists." It is international in scope. (SocioSite is affiliated with the "The International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publication" (ICAAP)) The links are divided into several categories some of which are sociologist, data archives, departments, associations, institutes, research centers, journals and general links. You can also browse an extensive list of subtopics in sociology on the Sociological Subject Areas page.

The SocioWeb
The SocioWeb is designed and maintained by Mark Blair. (A short biography of Mark Blair is available on the Pacific Web.) The stated purpose of the page is to act as "an independent guide to the sociological resources available on the Internet ..." Some of the categories of resources arranged on this page are 'net indexes & guides, giants of sociology, journals & 'zines, sociological associations, surveys and statistics.

Voice of the Shuttle: Cultural Studies
This page is maintained by Dr. Alan Liu of the University of California, Santa Barbara. "'Cultural studies' on this page designates the intersection between cultural criticism/theory and selective resources in sociology, media studies, postcolonial studies, economics, literature, and other fields chosen to represent the alignments that now signify 'culture' for the contemporary humanities." It houses a series of links, as well as a searchable database.

WCSU List: Sociology Internet Resources
This list is created and maintained by Professor Jerry Bannister of Western Connecticut State University. It is divided into several categories consisting of culture & society, ethnicity, women, family, criminology, theory, research, US Census, general resources and miscellaneous.

Projects/Surveys/Studies

These sites contain online data archives based on surveys and studies significant to many areas of the social sciences.

General Social Survey (GSS)
"The GSS (General Social Survey) is an almost annual, 'omnibus,' personal interview survey of US households conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) with James A. Davis and Tom W. Smith as principal investigators (PIs)." The topics or variables covered by this survey are very broad and general. "Topics are chosen, drawing on the advice of a large number of social scientists, to cover variables strategic for social science research. The eclecticism of the GSS is a mirror of the eclectic interests of contemporary social science."

Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)
"Columbia University's Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) works at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences. The center specializes in on-line data and information management, spatial data integration and training, and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in the environment."

The Health and Retirement Study (HRS)
"The University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study surveys more than 22,000 Americans over the age of 50 every two years. Supported by the National Institute on Aging, the study paints an emerging portrait of an aging America's physical and mental health, insurance coverage, financial status, family support systems, labor market status, and retirement planning." Public release datasets and files can be downloaded from the Data Center portion of this site.

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
The intent of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research is to provide "access to the world's largest archive of computer-based research and instructional data for the social sciences." As they state, their "data holdings cover a broad range of disciplines, including political science, sociology, demography, economics, history, education, gerontology, criminal justice, public health, foreign policy, and law."

Mexican Migration Project (MMP)
The Mexican Migration Project Web site provides "general information about the MMP Group: the project directors and staff, the origins of the MMP, the project's goals and the sources of funding, as well as the resources the project has produced in its 17-year history, including a bibliography of all published and unpublished documents produced by MMP research members and affiliates." To view the more about the personnel involved with this project, click here. Most core data files can be downloaded without restriction.

National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)
"The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is the principal source of information on the health of the civilian non-institutionalized population of the United States and is one of the major data collection programs of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)." The 1997 NHIS, the NHIS on disability, data highlights (including selected data on tobacco use and children's health) are all available for viewing and download.

The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health Study)
"Add Health is a school-based study of the health-related behaviors of adolescents in grades 7-12. It has been designed to explore the causes of these behaviors, with an emphasis on the influence of social context." Datasets, codebooks, and selected summary statistics are available. .

National Mortality Followback Survey
"The Mortality Followback Survey Program, begun in the 1960's by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), uses a sample of United States residents who die in a given year to supplement the death certificate with information from the next of kin or another person familiar with the decedent's life history. This information, sometimes enhanced by administrative records, provides a unique opportunity to study the etiology of disease, demographic trends in mortality, and other health issues."

Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID)
"The PSID is a longitudinal survey of a representative sample of US individuals and the families in which they reside. It has been ongoing since 1968. The data are collected annually, and the data files contain the full span of information collected over the course of the study. PSID data can be used for cross-sectional, longitudinal, and intergenerational analysis and for studying both individuals and families." You can make a custom subset of PSID data or download an entire dataset. Codebooks and questionnaires are also available. Read more about the PSID by clicking here.

Sociological Research Online
"Sociological Research Online publishes high quality applied sociology, focusing on theoretical, empirical and methodological discussions which engage with current political, cultural and intellectual topics and debates." Data on the Net
"Search or browse our listing of 361 Internet sites of numeric Social Science statistical data, data catalogs, data libraries, social science gateways, addresses and more." This site is maintained by the University of California, San Diego.

FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR)
UCR provides statistics on crime in the US in the past 6 years, information on National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), hate crime statistics, law enforcement and officers killed and assaulted. To find out what specific crimes are reported to the UCR program and other detailed information about the contents of the UCR link to the UCR Frequently Asked Questions page.

ICPSR Data Archive
This resource is "the world's largest archive of computerized social science data." It is maintained by the University of Michigan. It has a vast searchable database divided into the areas of: Health and Medical Care, International Archive of Education Data, Computerized Data on Aging, Criminal Justice Data, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Data, Census Data, Election 2000 and Homicide Research Working Group.

National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD)
"The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) is a branch of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan. NACJD acquires, archives, processes, and provides access to computer-readable criminal justice data collections for research and instruction. The NACJD Web site provides downloadable access to over 550 criminal justice data collections free of charge." About NACJD provides access to a detailed explanation of this archive and its holdings and includes a listing of staff and contact information.

National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
"NCHS data systems include data on vital events as well as information on health status, lifestyle and exposure to unhealthy influences, the onset and diagnosis of illness and disability, and the use of health care." Click on the About NCHS link for a full explanation of their activities, mission, organization structure and contact information.

National Vital Statistics System (NVSS)
"The National Vital Statistics System is responsible for the Nation's official vital statistics." The NVSS is part of the National Center for Health Statistics. "Additional programs related to the National Vital Statistics System include the Linked Birth and Infant Death Data Set, National Maternal and Infant Health Survey, National Mortality Followback Survey, the National Survey of Family Growth and the National Death Index."

University of Michigan Documents Center - Sociology

US Department of Commerce - US Census Bureau
The mission of the Census Bureau is "to be the preeminent collector and provider of timely, relevant, and quality data about the people and economy of the United States." Population estimates, social and economic indicators for housing, income and poverty are just a few of the areas that the Census Bureau tracks, tabulates and makes available. US Department of Education-National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
"NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data that are related to education in the United States and other nations." Datasets and surveys are available covering the areas of elementary, secondary and postsecondary education. Use the Encyclopedia of ED Facts to browse or search their major statistical compendiums such as Condition of Education, Digest of Education Statistics, or Projections of Education Statistics. NCES Fast Facts contain data tailored to preselected topics. For personnel and contact information use the NCES Staff Directory.

US Department of Justice - Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS)
"The BJS collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government." US Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS)
"The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics." The BLS tracks a variety of labor related variables such as unemployment rates, consumer price index, producer price index and occupational safety & health data at the local, state, regional and national level. The BLS has a mission statement and listing of senior management officials to validate their credibility.
