- SUBJECT SEARCHING:
Subject headings and subdivisions are categories used in the Library catalog to classify the content of books and other materials available in the Library. Use a subject search if you want to find information about a single concept or idea such as comic books and children or children's literature. Also use a subject search if you want to narrow a keyword search that retrieves too many irrelevant results. There are many related terms for the subject heading Juvenile Literature or Children's Literature . Click here or here to link to these related subject headings respectively. Children's Literature subject headings are often divided into subdivisions (specific aspects of the main subject heading). Example subdivision structures are shown below:
Subject Heading -- Time Period -- subtopic
Children's Literature -- 20th Century -- History and criticism
Subject Heading -- Geographic location -- subtopic
Children's Literature -- United States -- BibliographyWhen entering subject headings in the library catalog search form it is not necessary to include punctuation or capital letters. For instance when entering the subject heading Children's Literature -- 20th Century -- History and criticism, you could type children's literature 20th century history and criticism in the search form.
- KEYWORD SEARCHING:
Use a keyword search when you need to find a match between two or more concepts. Combine search terms with the connectors and, or, not. A sample keyword search is shown below:
children and literature and fantasy
Truncation allows users to stem words or retrieve root words with several endings. The truncation symbol in the Owens Library catalog is an asterisk(*). Use double asterisks ** for more than 6 characters. The search shown below will locate records in the Owens Library catalog that include the words child, children, or childhood.
child*
Keyword searches may include nesting. Nested terms are similar or related terms (such as child* and juvenile* in the example below). You enclose nested terms in parentheses and combine them with an "or":
(child* or young adult* or juvenile* or adolescent*) and literature and fantas*
Qualifying a search allows users to look for information in a specific field of a catalog record such as the author, title, subject or note field. The search shown below locates the words science fair in records with juvenile literature in the s (subject) field only.
