Northwest Missouri State University

Meet the study abroad coordinator

Jeaneth PurielDear Northwest students:

The Study Abroad Office welcomes you to our website and thanks you for visiting us. The Study Abroad Office is located in the Intercultural and International Center, Student Union second floor. I encourage you to visit us so you can learn more about our programs.

In a world community that is constantly growing and changing the ability to interact with people from different cultures and different backgrounds has become vital. At Northwest, our goal is to offer programs designed to give you these skills. All of our students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons, expand their foreign language skills, and become more interculturally competent by immersing themselves in a new culture and experiencing firsthand global living through Study Abroad.

Textbooks, Professors, newspapers, and the internet can tell you about experiences abroad, but the best way to learn about a culture is to go to the source. Living in another country is much different from simply vacationing there. In the weeks or months you are there, you get to know the people, the customs, and the way locals live instead of simply touring the national monuments and taking pictures in front of them. Lifelong friendships are made, and your eyes will be opened to a different way of life- you will become more culturally competent in the process.

Besides offering an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, there are many practical benefits of studying abroad. The experience of studying in a foreign country not only looks great on a resume, but it lets potential employers know that you are independent and willing to go the extra mile. Although challenging, studying abroad will give you a new-found confidence, let your world outlook open up, and acquire a broader perspective of the world.

The most important part about studying abroad is the opportunity to earn Northwest academic credit while attending a university abroad. Our programs can take you to 40 different countries. Whether for a faculty led program, a summer program, a trimester or academic year, you will have the opportunity to earn Northwest credits toward your graduation abroad, at the same time you are exposed to a new educational system.

At the Study Abroad Office we will assist you in identifying the program best suited to meet your academic and cultural interests. We will link you with academic advisors, financial aid counselors and other student service providers to plan a rewarding international educational experience.

We are looking forward to meeting you and we will be thrilled to be part of one of your life changing experiences.

Sincerely,

Jeaneth Puriel
