Welcome to the Office of Intercultural Affairs
Notice: In January of 2009, The Office changed from the Office of Minority Affairs to the Office of Intercultural Affairs.
This name change was initiated for several reasons
-
To better communicate the idea that the office has a dual purpose- providing specialized support services for students of color and working with ALL campus stakeholders in campus wide intercultural development.
-
To incorporate progressive language around different and emphasize our focus on interaction among cultural groups as well as celebration of individual heritage
-
To better be identified as part of the Intercultural International Center
The Office of Intercultural Affairs is one of the three specialized departments in the Intercultural International Center; a part of the Student Affairs Division of Northwest Missouri State University.
How Do We Support the University's Mission?
The mission of the Office of Intercultural Affairs is to assist Northwest in its continued mission to be a learner-centered university. This is done by focusing on the development of intercultural competencies for all students in order to prepare them for a world that is becoming increasingly global and multicultural. We also assist the University in living its cultural core values in the following ways:
Tie In To Cultural Core Values
- We focus on our students and stakeholders - by asking about, understanding and responding to the needs of students of color.
- We care about each other - by providing a warm and inclusive environment that validates and celebrates different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives and encourage interaction with embracing of difference.
- We are a learning organization continually improving the university and ourselves - by keeping up with current research and best practices, and incorporating validated methods into our delivery of services.
- We collaborate and work together to accomplish our goals - by working with other student affairs and academic departments to provide quality intercultural development programs and services.
- We master the details of what we do. We are leaders in our field - by constantly evaluating and improving our programs and services.
- We are open and ethical - by doing our job with integrity, being transparent, and open to feedback.
