Meeting with my MORE student became one of the highlights of the week- one that gave back to me just as much as I tried to give to him. As a staff member, it gave me real insight into what students go through- academically and socially- and all the challenges they're facing. I took away several strategies on how to prepare my own students for success, knowing some of the issues they tackle every day and seeing life through their eyes. As our mentoring relationship progressed, I think we both became more comfortable with the process and discovered a lot of communalities as well! An eye opener for both us.~ Kirk Wayman, 2009/10 Mentor, KXCV News and Public Affairs Director
This is an invitation to serve as a Faculty (For this purpose, faculty includes administrators and staff) Mentor to one or more students in the MORE program.
The Office of Intercultural Affairs coordinates a Mentoring, Retention and Leadership Development program (Mentors Over Retention and Education-MORE) for incoming students of color and Cultural Diversity Scholarship recipients. Freshmen are paired with upper class mentors who assist them in their college transition and connect them to relevant campus resources. In addition, all MORE participants meet the first two to three Mondays of every month to discuss relevant current issues, learn about themselves and develop their leadership skills.
Each interested Faculty Member will be paired with a Mentor/Mentee pair or 1 one or more Mentors or Mentees. We are requesting that Faculty meet with the students at least once a Month. We will be pleased if relationships develop and meetings are more frequent
