Job Description

To assist with counseling duties (one-on-one appointments and small group workshops) to Upward Bound students during the summer session.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•  Facilitate group and individual counseling sessions to program participants
•  Document participant contacts
•  Proctor and interpret standardized career assessments
•  Communicate to central staff any concerns about participants
•  Maintain participant confidentiality
•  Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings
•  Attend and participate in a job-training workshop

Communications:

• Ability to listen objectively Give advice and maintain confidentiality in accordance with standard counseling practices
• Give clear instructions and answer questions fully during workshops
• Immediately communicate any concerns to central staff members

Critical/Creative Thinking and Problem Solving:

• Person must work independently, and solve problems dealing with classroom mangement

Computer:

• Basic Microsoft Office and Internet skills needed

Competence in a Discipline:

• Students must be familiar with basic counseling theories and practices and be able to adhere to such practices

Personal/Social Development:

• Maintain confidentiality
• Properly treat others with respect and be able to work with high school students

Multicultural/Cultural Enrichment:

• Assist in faciliating students understanding/awareness of diversity in its many forms

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree and significant progress toward an advanced degree in Guidance and Counseling, Social Work or Counseling Psychology is required.

Experience: Previous experience working with low-income, first-generation high school students will enhance employment possibility. Personal experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles to success is preferred.

Skills: Individual, group, and career counseling skills; ability to document duties performed.

Wage Rate

$1,350 for the five-week summer program.

Approximately 20 hours per week
