Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS)

Job Description

As a member of the teaching team, the Teaching Assistant will assist instructors in the classroom and are accountable to the other team members and to the Program Assistant, Director and Counseling Coordinator.

  • Attend UBMS classes
  • Supervise students in classrooms, labs and during class breaks
  • Serve as a role model for high school participants in the college classroom and lab
  • Participate in class field trips
  • Consult/coordinate with instructors to provide assistance as needed, especially in group research projects and academic tutoring
  • Monitor student progress, attendance, and behavior and enforce program rules



  • Must have completed Bachelor's degree or significant progress (60+ credit hours) toward completion of Bachelor's degree by June 1, 2014
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is required
  • Enrollment in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math Education, Science Education, or Computer Science
  • Classroom or related experiences with disadvantaged youth
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English language both orally and in print
  • Energetic, responsible and creative
  • Knowledge of effective teaching/learning processes
  • Experience working with high school students and open to diverse background of students
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Basic Microsoft Office and Internet skills 
  • Personal experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles to success is preferred

Wage Rate

$10.00 per hour

Hours Available

20 Hours per week for six weeks
