Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS)

Job Description

Live and work with 50 high school students full-time for six weeks. Provide high school students with evening supervision and mentoring. Accountable to the other team members and to the Program Assistant Director and Counseling Coordinator.

Essential Functions:

  • Live and work with 50 high school students full-time for six weeks
  • Serve as a tutor, mentor, "family group" leader for UBMS students
  • Participate in weekend field trips
  • Plan, organize, and carry out small and large group activities
  • Communicate regularly with teaching team members, counselors, and Central Staff


  • Must have completed at least sophomore year of college (60 credit hours) by June 1, 2014
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • Familiar with skill building and learning styles and able to provide adequate instruction
  • Responsible, energetic, creative, team-oriented
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English language both orally and in print
  • Basic Microsoft Office and Internet skills
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work closely with Upward Bound Math & Science participants and treat others with respect
  • Enrollment in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math Education, Science Education, or Computer Science is preferred
  • Personal experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles to success is preferred
  • Ability to walk long distances, participate in outdoor activities and work extended hours with a positive attitude

Wage Rate

$385 per Week, in addition to Room and Board

Hours Available

On duty 5 p.m. - 8 a.m. Monday-Friday; all day Saturday & Sunday; one weekend off (to be determined); Employment is for six weeks
