Writing Center Tutor

Job Description

To assist student writers in improving their writing; Conduct one on one tutoring appointments with students; conduct small group tutoring sessions to supplement English 110 students, keep records and reports

Communications:              

  • Utilize effective oral communications with answering questions
  • Communicate writing strengths and weaknesses

Critical/Creative Thinking and Problem Solving:  

  • Identify and prioritize writers' needs
  • Vary approaches and explanations to illustrate concepts

Computer:           

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel; Internet
  • Use computers for scheduling, communicating and instruction delivery

 Self-Directed Learning:  

  • Use print resources for skill enhancement and instruction with clients
  • Willing to learn new software programs on the job

Competence in a Discipline:         

  • Familiarity with rhetorical concepts, language use and academic conventions

Personal/Social Development:      

  • Exhibit professionalism and courtesy
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Exhibit positive customer relations skills
  • Interpersonal skills conducive to establishing rapport and comfort in a helping relationship

 Team Work/Team Leading:

  • Ability to work positively with others: tutees, tutors, graduate assistants, faculty

  • Have ability to work with diverse campus populations
 

Qualifications

Excellent writing skills and oral communications abilities; Knowledge of rhetoric, grammar, usage, MLA or alternate style of documentation;     Familiar with Northwest's sequence of composition courses; Completion of 10-380, Practicum in Teaching Writing preferred

$7.75
