Job Description

To assist writers in improving drafts through revision by explaining rhetorical concepts, language use, and academic conventions; One on one tutoring by appointment; Diagnosing and prioritizing writers' needs; Communicating strengths and weaknesses to the writer; Guiding composition and revision work without overtaking the composition.

Communications:  

  • Utilize effective oral and written communication when working with students
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills conducive to establishing rapport and comfort in a helping relationship

Critical/Creative Thinking and Problem Solving: 

  • Resolve needs of clients


  Computer:

  • Knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel, Internet research, and scheduling software
  • Willingness to learn new programs on the job

Self-Directed Learning:

  • Work unsupervised using print resources for skills enhancement and instruction with clients

Competence in Discipline:

  • Knowledge of rhetoric, grammar, usage, MLA style (or alternate discipline preferred documentation style)
  • Familiarity with Northwest's composition sequence

Personal/Social Development:

  • Exhibit professionalism and courtesy
  • Exhibit positive customer relations skills

Teamwork/Team Leading:

  • Attend staff meetings and in-service workshops for staff development
  • Small group tutoring to supplement English 110 Development Writing class work

Multicultural: 

  • Have ability to work with diverse campus populations

Qualifications

Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; Successful completion of 10-380 Practicum in Teaching Writing is preferred; All fall new-hires must enroll in English 380, Practicum for Teaching English. This is a one-unit course offered on Tuesdays from 5-550.   Students who are hired in the spring agree to enroll in this course in the subsequent fall and to train ahead of time with current GAs and the Writing Center Coordinator during the spring semester.
