Professional/Administrative Staff - Job Description

Position

Director, Minority Affairs, Intercultural and International Center

Employment Status

Exempt, 12-month, full-time position

Position Summary

Coordinates and administers programs and services that serve the needs of the student of color population of the University and foster a diverse campus community. Focuses on retention of students of color. Initiates and implements educational programs for classroom, community and co-curricular settings that promote diversity and multiculturalism. Supports campus diversity by serving as an advocate and resource for minority students through good student development practice, stimulating student learning outside of the classroom. Co-administers the Intercultural and International Center. Additionally, the director ensures the continuous quality improvement of all aspects of the Intercultural/International program and contributes to the successful development and implementation of strategic Student Affairs initiatives.

Essential Functions

  1. Designs, implements and assesses recruitment and retention strategies for students of color
  2. Designs, implements, administers and assesses experiential student learning opportunities that promote multicultural & globally focused education
  3. Designs, implements, administers and assesses orientation programs for students of color
  4. Advises students of color and multicultural student organizations
  5. Coordinates and administers educational training and programming for faculty, staff and community on intercultural and multicultural issues
  6. Administers educational leadership development training programming and opportunities for students of color
  7. Organizes a variety of campus events that celebrate and educate about different ethnic cultures
  8. Administers community-based educational programs to stimulate and promote intercultural and multicultural understanding and appreciation
  9. Co-directs the Intercultural and International Center, developing policies, programs and processes necessary to carry out the goals and action agendas of the Center
  10. Serves on University committees, task forces and teams
  11. Coordinates educational and co-curricular programs for the multicultural community including students of color, GBLT students and international students
  12. Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field
Experience: At least one year of experience at the professional level in education, business or a service industry; previous experience working with diverse groups of people, coordinating programs and supervising others; working knowledge of multicultural issues and concepts
Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to assist ethnic minority students in facing the special challenges encountered on a predominately white campus; strong organizational and analytical skills; ability to manage projects and design/implement/evaluate programs; working knowledge of student development practices

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in higher education administration, college stduent personnel, intercultural studies or a related field
Experience: Three or more years experience in higher education at the professional level, preferably in student affairs, multicultural and international education, or a related area; prior administrative experience including staff supervision, budget management, strategic planning, program development and assessment/evaluation
Skills: Knowledge of student development theory and practice, multicultural and international issues, concepts and diverse cultures, continuous quality improvement concepts and techniques; leadership theory and practice; minority student recruitment/retention techniques; excellent facilitating, teaching and advising skills

Working Conditions

Air-conditioned office. Some nights and weekend hours required

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position requires minimal supervision and supervises a secretary, student office assistants and a graduate assistant

Office machines including computer and software (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)
