Position

Resident Tutor/Mentor (RT), Upward Bound Math/Science (UBMS)

Employment Status

Exempt; Live and work full-time for the UBMS summer session of six weeks; June 5-July 17, 2010 Monday-Friday

Position Summary

Live and work with 60 high school students full-time for six weeks. Provide high school students with evening supervision and mentoring.

Essential Functions

  1. Live and work with 60 high school students full-time for six weeks
  2. Serve as a tutor, mentor, "family group" leader for ten students
  3. Participate in weekend field trips
  4. Plan, organize, and carry out small and large group activities

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Must have completed at least sophomore year of college (50 credits) by June 1, 2010; minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
Certification/License: Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Experience: Familiar with skill building and learning styles and be able to provide adequate instruction
Skills: Responsible; energetic; creative; team-oriented; ability to give clear instructions and answer questions fully; basic Microsoft Office & Internet skills; maintain confidentiality; ability to work closely with Upward Bound Math/Science participants
Other: Must be at least 20 years of age by January 1, 2010; clear understanding and support of program's goals; properly treat others with respect

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Enrollment in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math Education, Science Education, or Computer Science
Experience: Personal experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles to sucess

Working Conditions

On duty 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday-Friday; All day Saturday & Sunday; One weekend off (to be determined); Employment is six weeks (June 1-July 19, 2010); Six positions available

Typical Physical Demands

Must have ability to walk long distances, participate in outdoor activities and work extended hours with a positive attitude
