Residential Counselor, Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing

Position Summary

The Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing at Northwest Missouri State University is seeking to fill one female Residential Counselor position. The Residential Counselor (RC) is charged with the responsibility for providing continuity and stability in the student experience at the Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing (MASMC). RCs are full-time, live-in professional staff in a position that enriches the students' personal, social, emotional and academic growth.

Essential Functions

1. Role model responsible behavior for students who are concurrently completing their junior and senior years of high school while earning an associates degree from Northwest Missouri State University
2. Live on student floor in the Residence Hall with direct responsibility for approximately 18 to 25 students
3. Actively engage in the monitoring, mentoring, documentation and reporting student academic and behavioral progress
4. Supervise approximately three Community Leaders who assist with development of the residential community
5. Plan and implement activities and programs based on the MASMC educational and social programming model
6. Manage residential facilities, creating a safe, healthy and nurturing living/learning environment
7. Intervene in emotional or physical crises
8. Communicate frequently with parents
9. Interpret, enforce and observe policies and behavioral guidelines as established in the MASMC Student/Parent Handbook
10. Work scheduled weekly and weekend hours, approximately 4 p.m. to midnight to include office work, front desk services, student development and student transportation
11. Provide transportation for students in a University van after completing required training
12. Facilitate developmental courses of Seminar and Colloquium on the topics of transition and adjustment for first-year and second-year students respectively
13. Serve on Missouri Academy committees
14. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree
Certification/License: Maintain a driver's license
Experience: Previous residential life experience and/or previous experience working with adolescents
Skills: Effective oral and written communication; intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office; intermediate computer literacy; appropriate decision-making; strong community building; integrative judgment and problem solving; creativey and flexibility
Other: Must be able to pass criminal and employment background check

Preferred Qualifications

Working Conditions

Residence hall environment and standard office environment serving academically high-achieving minors on a hall staff of seven Residential Counselors

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise Community Leaders who are Missouri Academy 2nd year students who assist with development of the residential community

Typical Physical Demands

Business office environment; ability to lift 25 pounds; capable of moving recreation equipment, barbeque equipment, chairs, tables and other relatively light furniture
