Leon F. Miller

The Leon F. Miller Grant for Graduate Studies may be awarded to two full-time graduate students pursuing a graduate degree at Northwest Missouri State University. Dr. Miller was named Dean of Graduate Studies at Northwest in 1969 and Dean of Graduate School in 1978, and held that title until his retirement. President Dean Hubbard, at the Retirement Dinner on April 17, 1985, referred to Dr. Miller as “the father of Graduate Education on the Northwest campus” citing his part in the development and guidance of the graduate programs.

Funds for the Leon F. Miller Grant for Graduate Studies are invested and managed through the Northwest Foundation. The awards are contingent upon fund availability as determined by the Foundation. Eligibility for the awards require the students to be fully accepted into a graduate program and enrolled in a minimum of nine hours of graduate study each trimester for which the grant is awarded. Recipients are selected by an application process through the Graduate Council, which may consider other criteria such as scholastic standing or financial need. The award may be used toward tuition, textbooks, and other fees.

Applications and deadline information is e-mailed to students early in the spring trimester.  Hardcopy applications are also available to students through the Graduate Office.

Bearcat Break

Beginning January 2007 a new out-of-state graduate tuition adjustment was approved for students from select geographic regions who enroll at the St. Joseph Center, the Kansas City Center or the collaborative program at Missouri Southern State University. Graduate students will pay in-state tuition if they take all coursework at the off-campus sites and reside in one of the following counties in Kansas (St. Joseph Area-Doniphan; Kansas City Area-Atchison, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, and Wyandotte; Joplin area-Crawford, Cherokee) or in Oklahoma (Delaware, Craig, and Ottawa). There is no application required for the Bearcat Break. The Bearcat Break does not cover online courses or programs.

Graduate Non-Resident Waiver

Any full-time (9 hrs), degree seeking non-resident or international graduate-level student is eligible for the waiver. Students receiving a graduate assistantship, pursuing a specialist degree or enrolled in an online only program are not eligible to receive the waiver. Students will earn the value of the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition after completing their first (full-time) trimester at Northwest and earning a minimum cumulative Northwest graduate GPA of 3.30. Students must maintain continuous full-time enrollment in order to renew the waiver for the future trimester. If a student does not maintain continuous enrollment they will lose their waiver. This GPA requirement will be evaluated at the end of each trimester and new waivers will be made on this cycle. Students can earn this waiver for a maximum of one-degree program. Student may be enrolled in undergraduate level courses that fulfill prerequisites for their program as long as they are in an approved Graduate Program of Study.

This is an automatic waiver that will be applied to the student’s account. There is no application required to be considered for this waiver.
