Courses in Art History at Northwest Missouri State University, "from the caves to day before yesterday", offer students an in-depth understanding of their artistic heritage in the Western World. Couched in historical, cultural, political, and economic contexts, discussions focus on works of art, their materials and methods, and the artists who produced them. Field trips to regional museums and exhibits in the Northwest DeLuce Fine Art Gallery provide opportunities for direct study of works of art from every period and from cultures around the world. Active participation through discussions, oral presentations, quizzes, exams, and papers rounds out the educational experience in each class. Specialty classes, such as Women Artists, may be added to the introductory Survey and upper-class courses of Ancient/Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, Nineteenth Century, and Modern and Contemporary Art.
