College of Arts and Sciences

These majors may also be eligible for the following College of Arts and Sciences scholarship:

Dr. Marvin D. Combs Memorial Scholarship [F][C]

Available to first-time and continuing students who are graduates of high schools in Worth, Gentry, Harrison or Nodaway counties, who have declared a major in one of the disciplines housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and who are enrolled on a full-time basis at Northwest. This scholarship may be renewed by maintaining at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA.

Department-Wide

Jean Jennings Bartik Women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a female declaring a major in the Computer Science and Information Systems, Mathematics, or Science. Recipient shall maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and financial need will be leading criteria.

Ruth (Collins) McQuerry & Wayne H. McQuerry Memorial Scholarship [C]

The recipient shall be enrolled full time and have declared a major in Natural Sciences and/or Mathematics maintaining a 2.75 GPA. First preference shall be given to a Nanoscale-Physics and/or Mathematics major. Preference shall also be given to a Missouri high school graduate. Academic achievement and financial need will be leading criteria.

Biology

Gayle Miller Bilden Memorial Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a junior or senior with a declared major in the chemistry field or a degree program which combines Chemistry and Biology. Recipient shall maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30.

Dr. Robert & Mrs. Winifred Dunshee Rotary Scholarship [C]

Recipients shall have declared a major in Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, or Life Sciences and shall have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Academic achievement and financial need will be leading criteria.

Freshman Nanoscale Science Scholarship [F]

Awarded to incoming freshmen who have declared a major in Nanoscale Science with emphasis in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and have at least a 3.00 high school GPA. Six scholarships will be awarded with two being awarded from each area of emphasis.

  • Award: $500* (one-time award)
  • Deadline: Feb. 1

William T. Garrett Scholarship [C]

Recipients shall have elected a major in biology, with preference given to those with a zoology emphasis. Must be classified as a Northwest sophomore, junior, or senior and shall demonstrate academic achievement and involvement in campus activities. Financial need will be considered.

Dr. Richard A. Hart Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a continuing student with a declared major in the biological sciences. Financial need will be considered.

Gweldon Long Family Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall have declared a major in pre-med, pre-pharmacy, or pre-Dentistry. Academic achievement and financial need will be leading criteria.

Irene Mueller Biology Scholarship [C]

A biology major that shows promise for excellence in the area of biology. Overall GPA of 3.00, 45 credit hours earned at Northwest (with 12 of these hours in biology), and good moral character.

Fred C. & Grace E. Nelson Scholarship [C]

This scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior biology major with an emphasis in pre-med or pre-dentistry and a minimum GPA of 3.00. Financial need will be considered.

Mark Robbins Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a junior or senior wildlife ecology and conservation major in good academic standing and achievement in field. Financial need will be considered.

B. D. & Janet Scott Biology Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall have declared a major in biology, have accumulated a minimum of 60 credit hours and be classified as either a junior or senior at Northwest. The recipient shall have a miniumum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and show financial need.

Chemistry/Physics

Gayle Miller Bilden Memorial Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a junior or senior with a declared major in the chemistry field or a degree program which combines chemistry and biology. Recipient shall maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30.

Chemistry Alumni Scholarship [C]

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding chemistry major for use towards tuition, fees, room and board or other college expense. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need.

Homer LeMar Jr. Scholarship [C]

This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior chemistry major with a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students with a desire to pursue a professional medical degree. Academic achievement and financial need will be leading criteria.

C F Gray Scholarship [C]

Candidates shall declare a major in chemistry, mathematics, or physics and attain junior or senior classification by the end of the current spring semester. Selection shall be by examination and personal interview (see exam announcement). Junior award winners may receive the scholarship for their senior year if they maintain a GPA of 3.5 in mathematics and science, and an overall GPA of 3.0. The exam will be held on the first Saturday in February.

Gromer Family Scholarship [F][C]

Recipient shall maintain a 3.0 GPA, exhibit financial need, be a pre-med major and be from the McFall, Glasgow, Harrisburg, Mo. area.

Haines Family Scholarship [C]

This annual scholarship will be awarded to a pre-pharmacy student. The recipient must be of good moral character, with excellent academic standing, show financial need and promise for excellence in the area of pharmacy.

Wilma Hall 20th Century Club Scholarship [F][C]

Recipient shall be a freshman or continuing student pursuing a career in the medical field at Northwest, shall have graduated from a Nodaway County high school, and shall maintain a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

Wilma Hall BPW Scholarship [F][C]

Recipient shall be a freshman pursuing a career in the medical field at Northwest, shall have graduated from a Nodaway County high school, and shall maintain a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

Martin Kanne Chemistry Scholarship [C]

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding chemistry major or related major. Selection will be based on financial need, academic standing, and professional promise.

Robert Lilley Memorial Scholarship [C]

Candidates shall declare a major in chemistry, mathematics or physics. Eligible students shall take all of their course work at Northwest and may receive scholarship for any year provided the student maintains a cumulative 2.50 GPA in chemistry, mathematics and physics and a cumulative overall GPA of 2.00. Students taking the Gray-Lilley Scholarship Exam will be given first consideration. Students wishing to apply for this scholarship should contact the department for exam date.

Gweldon Long Family Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall have declared a major in Pre-Medical, Pre-Pharmacy, or Pre-Dentistry. Academic achievement and financial need will be leading criteria.

Myrl & Katherine Long Memorial Scholarship [C]

Recipients shall maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have declared an academic major of chemistry or physics. Recipients shall be classified as juniors or seniors. Recipients receiving the scholarship during their junior year may be eligible for renewal for their senior year at the discretion of the selection committee.

Forrest G & Joan B Lowe Scholarship [F][C]

Recipients shall have elected a major in either mathematics or physics with a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA. Chosen from the following areas in order as they appear: Gilman City High School, Gilman City, Mo.; Northeast High School, Kansas City, Mo.; Maryville High School, Maryville, Mo.; then to applicants from any other school.

Mark Peavy Memorial Scholarship [C]

Recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0, major in physics, and have a junior or senior standing. All other criteria being equal, preference will be given to students graduating from a Missouri high school.

Dr. Jim Smeltzer Scholarship [C]

Students with a major or minor in the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, science education), with a preference to those who have taken the astronomy course at Northwest.

Mary Marie Smith Scholarship [C]

The recipient shall be classified as a sophomore, junior or senior and shall be a declared major in chemistry. The recipient shall maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

  • Award: One year tuition (maximum of 15 credit hours each semester)
  • Deadline: Feb. 1

J. Gordon Strong Scholarship [C]

The J. Gordon Strong Scholarship in chemistry is awarded annually to outstanding chemistry majors for use during their sophomore year. Selection is based on GPA, promise as professional chemists and participation in departmental activities.

United Electric Coop-Assoc Electrip Coop Tech Scholarship [C]

Recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and be studying pre-engineering. First preference is given to Missouri residents whose home is served by Missouri Electric Cooperative. Proof of service must be submitted with application.

Geology

Charles I. Frye Geology Scholarship [C]

Awarded annually to a high GPA sophomore or junior geology or earth science education major that shows promise of becoming a professional geologist/geology professor or earth science teacher, with suitability for graduate study and shows financial need.

Nursing
