AUTOMATIC RENEWAL SCHOLARSHIPS (NO APPLICATION NEEDED) 

Students who received the President's scholarship, Distinguished Scholar, Academic Excellence, Tower, Northwest Scholar, Cultural Enrichment Transfer President's, Transfer Distinguished, Transfer Academic,, University Scholar, Midwest Student Exchange Program, Out of State Award, Non-Resident Award, Northwest A+ Scholarship may renew the scholarship with the completion of 24 credit hours per academic year and the following NW cumulative GPA: (See Disclaimers which may apply, including summer enrollment and maximum awards for each scholarship).

 Disclaimers

  • The Freshman President's Scholarship and Distinguished Scholar will supersede Academic Excellence Scholar or Tower Scholar. Transfer President's Scholarship award will supersede the Transfer Distinguished or Transfer Academic Scholarship.
  • Undergraduate scholarships are restricted for use during a student's first undergraduate program.
  • All scholarship recipients must be enrolled full-time (12 Northwest hours per trimester) to receive University scholarships.
  • Students must be accepted for admission by specified dates before scholarship awards can be offered.
  • Admission-based scholarships have admission application deadline of May 1 to guarantee scholarship awards. For students who complete their admission application after May 1, scholarships will be awarded contingent upon available funding.
  • Students participating in a study abroad program where fees are waived will not receive the Nonresident Award, the Out-of-State Award or Midwest Student Exchange that trimester.
  • Major-specific and private scholarship award amounts funded through the Northwest Foundation may fluctuate with funding availability.
  • Freshman President's, Boys/Girls State and Phi Theta Kappa scholarships are only available to students beginning in fall trimester.
  • Transferable credit hours do not include AP, CLEP, military or nongraded credit hours.
  • Renewal requirements must be met within the academic year sequence (fall, spring and/or summer) in order to maintain continuous award of the scholarship.
  • Northwest's scholarship programs are subject to change from year to year based on funding levels and University priorities. While Northwest will attempt to honor renewal programs based on the student's year of admission, the University cannot always guarantee this.

Marion and HJ Fischer Scholarship (Nonresidents Paying MO Tax)
Awarded in the form of a fee waiver, this scholarship is for non-residents who are paying Missouri tax. No separate application is required. A copy of the Missouri tax form verifying the amount of tax paid should be sent to the Bursar's Office. Students will receive a reduction on nonresident tuition equal to the amount of tax paid. However, a student will not pay less than Resident tuition.

Other University and State-Sponsored Scholarships

AMERICAN DREAM GRANT

First Year Award: Through the American Dream Grant, Northwest will fill the gap between the cost of tuition, room and board, primary textbooks and the use of a computer for qualifying students so that the maximum annual payment the student will need to make during their first year at Northwest will be no more than $3,500 annually (combined fall and spring terms). To qualify, the student must be accepted to Northwest as a first-time freshman, complete the FAFSA and all verification documents by April 1 priority date and have an EFC (expected family contribution) as a result of the FAFSA of $2,000 or less (dependent or independent students). The student must also apply for all federal, state, institutional and athletic scholarships or grants that he or she might be eligible for. After all resources are added together, America Dream funds will be used to fill any remaining gap down to $3,500, the maximum contribution required of the student. All federal and state awarding guidelines will be followed.

Second Year Award: Renewable for one year as a tuition only scholarship. Combination of federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarship plus American Dream Grant covers regular tuition. Must meet the following stipulations:
Award Reapplication of FAFSA by April 1 for consideration of state grants used in determining American Dream funding

BRIGHT FLIGHT (MISSOURI HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP)

Eligible students may renew with a cumulative 2.50 GPA and completion of 24 credit hours per academic year for a maximum award of 10 trimesters.

Actual awards contingent on state appropriations allocated for the program on a yearly basis 

MISSOURI MINORITY TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for the Missouri Minorit Teaching Scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

DeadlineBe a resident of Missouri.
DeadlineBe African American, Asian American, Hispanic American or Native American.
DeadlineBe a high school senior; college student or returning adult (without a degree) who ranks in the top 25% of their high school class and scores at or above the 75th percentile on the ACT or SAT examination;
   DeadlineOr, individuals who have completed 30 college hours and have a 
      cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0;
   DeadlineOr, individuals with a baccalureate degree who are returning to an 
      approved math or science teacher education program.
DeadlineAttend an approved teacher education program at a community college, four-year college or university in Missouri.

MISSOURI RETURNING HEROES' EDUCATION ACT

Northwest Missouri State University is a participant of the Missouri Returning Heroes' Education Act program. The Heroes' Act limits tuition and fees charged to combat veterans to fifty ($50.00) dollars per credit hour, for any program leading to a certificate of Bachelor's degree. A "combat veteran" is any person who served in armed combat after September 11, 2001, who was a Missouri resident when first entering the military and who was discharged from military service under honorable conditions.

To initiate the process, a veteran must complete the form (each year) and return it with a copy of his or her DD-214 (initial application only) to:

The Financial Assistance Office will evaluate eligibility for the Heroes' Act after this form and the DD-214 are received. Veterans must maintain a 2.50 cumulative GPA in order to maintain eligibility for additional semesters.

VIETNAM VETERAN SURVIVOR GRANT PROGRAM

The Vietnam Veteran Survivor Grant Program offers up to 12 grants annually to children and spouses of Vietnam veterans who served between 1961 and 1972 and whose deaths were caused by or attributed to exposure to toxic chemical during the Vietnam conflict. The veteran must have been a Missouri resident when entering the military and at the time of death. To be eligible for the grant, a student must be an undergraduate enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) at a participating Missouri postsecondary school, maintain satisfactory academic progress, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For a complete description of eligibility requirements, students can go to the Missouri Department of Higher Education (MDHE) website, and may download and complete the application or request it from MDHE at (800) 473-6757.

Award Award: Varies. Maximum award per semester will be the lesser of actual tuition charged for 12 credit hours at the school in which you are enrolled full-time OR the average amount of tuition charged for 12 credit hours at the Missouri public four-year regional institutions.

WARTIME VETERAN'S SURVIVORS GRANT PROGRAM

The Wartime Veteran’s Survivors Grant Program offers 25 grants per year to children and spouses of Veteran whose deaths or injuries were a result of combat action or were attributed to illness that was contracted while serving in combat action, or who became 80% disabled due to injuries or accidents sustained in combat action since September 11, 2001. The veteran must have a Missouri resident when first entering the military or at the time of death or injury. To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or otherwise lawfully present in the U.S., be enrolled at least half-time in a participating college or university, and be the veteran’s spouse at time of death or injury OR the veteran’s child who is under 25 years of age. Eligible students must download the application from the website and complete it or request it from MDHE at (800) 473-6757.

Award Award: Varies. The maximum amount awarded per semester will be the sum of the following:
    Award The lesser of the actual tuition charged for the number of hours in which 
    you are enrolled OR the amount of tuition charged a Missouri resident for the 
    same number of hours at the University of Missouri Columbia.
    Award Up to $2,000 a semester for room and board
    Award The lesser of the actual cost of books OR $500
Award Deadline: None

MARGUERITE ROSS BARNETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Missouri resident 18 years of age or older, enrolled at least half-time, but less than full-time. Be employed and compensated for at least 20 hours of work per week. Demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA prior to scholarship Deadline. For application or go to the DHE website. Scholarship can be renewed annually with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 until a student has obtained a baccalaureate degree or has completed 150 credit hours.

Award Award: Maximum annual scholarship is the lesser of: actual tuition charged at the school where you are enrolled or your demonstrated financial need.

NATIONAL GUARD SCHOLARSHIP

The purpose of this Award is to encourage students to serve their country through the National Guard and at the same time, continue their education at Northwest. Students must provide a letter of good standing from their commanding officer as proof of eligibility, maintain a 2.50 GPA and be enrolled on a full-time basis (12 hours or more per trimester) to receive the scholarship. Award Award: Students residing in residence halls will receive $700 per year while those residing off-campus will receive $475 per year.

ROTC-CAMPUS BASED ARMY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Two and three-year scholarships available each year to qualified students who are enrolled or will enroll in the Army ROTC Program.

Provided: payment of all tuition and fees as they relate to student's major OR room and board, plus monthly tax-free stipend of:

$300 a month for freshmen
$350 a month for sophomores
$450 a month for juniors
$500 a month for seniors

(For up to 10 months per year for duration of the scholarship)

Includes payment of all tuition and fees as they relate to the student's major OR room and board, plus a monthly tax-free stipend of:

NICK BOWEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to full-time students in good academic standing who are active members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. The recipient must submit a one page essay to demonstrate how they overcame some type of barrier to succeed in their education. Contact Sigma Phi Epsilon advisor for application.

CLEAR, CAYHOGA, MUDDY CREEKS SCHOLARSHIP Indicates this scholarship has an downloadable application

Eligible recipients of the Clear, Cayhoga, Muddy Creeks Scholarship must be Missouri residents currently residing in the district previously known and designated as the Clear, Cayhoga, Muddy Creeks Watershed District. This former watershed district includes a large portion of the West Nodaway R-l School District and small portions of the Maryville R-ll and North Nodaway R-Vl School Districts. Eligible recipients shall be Northwest freshman or sophomores, freshman minimum 2.0 cumulative high school GPA, and sophomores minimum 2.5 Northwest cumulative GPA. Eligible recipients shall have demonstrated good school and community citizenship, and all other factors being equal, financial need may be the determining factor in the selection of recipients.

PAT DANNER SCHOLARSHIP

Preference for this Award will be given to a "displaced homemaker," with second preference given to a similarly worthy student who is overcoming barriers to obtain their college degree.

J.W. JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to students with junior standing (75 or more credit hours). Must demonstrate strong academic achievement, leadership and/or service accomplishments, involvement with campus/community, and financial need. MARVIN E. AND KATHRYN B. LEHNEN SCHOLARSHIP

Recipients shall have completed minimum 2 trimesters at Northwest with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by May 2006. First preference shall be given to non-traditional students majoring in business, and then those majoring in any discipline, may then be considered. Recipients must maintain employment throughout the school year, demonstrate financial need, and show considerable commitment to higher education. Two letters of reference (one from an instructor and one from work supervisor) must be submitted with application. Scholarship application available at Student Support Service Office.

THE NATIONAL RESIDENCE HALL HONORARY BEARCAT CHAPTER LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

Recipients shall be full-time undergraduate students, with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Two leadership Awards available to students who have lived in Northwest residence halls for 2-3 trimesters. Recipient must demonstrate participation in betterment of residence halls. Contact Rose Viau, in Residential Life office at 562-1085.

NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP

The recipient shall be classified as a junior or a senior by the University and shall maintain enrollment for the fall and spring trimesters and be considered a full time student by the University. The recipient shall maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. The recipients shall be actively involved with PowWow at Northwest Missouri State University and shall additionally demonstrate dedicated involvement and commitment to the preservation, promotion and celebration of the Native American heritage in general. NORTHWEST SUPPORT STAFF (Dependent) SCHOLARSHIP

Eligible recipients shall be enrolled as a full-time student, shall maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA and submit a letter to the committee stating academic and/or career goals. Eligible recipients shall be children or spouses of any Northwest Missouri State University support staff employee who is employed on the final day of the trimester general registration in which the scholarship is awarded. The committee, at their discretion, may consider financial need and involvement in school and community activities in the selection.

NORTHWEST SUPPORT STAFF (Staff) SCHOLARSHIP

Eligible recipients shall be enrolled in a maximum of six credit hours per semester, be degree seeking, shall maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA and submit a letter to the committee stating academic and/or career goals. Eligible recipients shall be a full time support staff employee with a minimum of one year employment at Northwest Missouri State University. The scholarship will not be awarded if the employee has been terminated prior to the final day of the semester of general registration.

SOCIETY OF INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADORS (SIA) SCHOLARSHIP

SIA is a group of donors committed to providing rewarding experiences to international students thereby creating a more robust learning environment at Northwest.

SIA has endowed this scholarship to recognize outstanding contributions made by an international student (a foreign national student in F-1 or J-1 visa status only) to promote and create a pluralistic campus climate. Awarded to a continuing undergraduate international student (as classified by the International Affairs Director)who is enrolled on a full-time basis at Northwest Missouri State University, the recipient shall have a minimum 2.75 NW cumulative GPA of twelve earned Northwest credit hours and have demonstrated merit and involvement within the Northwest campus and community. Specifically the applicant will demonstrate leadership or merit in promoting intercultural programs or experiences or will have demonstrated skill educating the general student population about the personal and professional importance of understanding international issues and possessing different perspectives thus marking the traits of a globally prepared citizen.

Sophomore, junior, or senior who shows financial need. Applicant must permanently reside within a 125 mile radius of Maryville. Minimum 3.00 GPA. Parent, spouse or guardian cannot be a member of university faculty, staff or administration.
