Listed below are student organizations that are directly related to psychology or sociology. For a complete listing of campus organizations, please refer to Connections: A guide to student organizations, a document published yearly by the student senate.
Criminal Justice Club
Members examine the criminal justice system from both a psychological and legal standpoint. Discussions and programs focus on ways to prevent crime.
GALTAN: Gay and Lesbian Tolerance at Northwest
Focus is on support of gays, lesbians, and their friends at Northwest as well as educating citizens of the region about gay/lesbian/bisexual issues.
Journal Club
The Journal Club is an informal meeting of psychology majors and minors who are interested in current events in psychology. Members read and then meet to discuss "cutting-edge" research being conducted by nationally recognized psychologists. The club also reads articles that are suggested by lecturers who are invited to speak at department symposia.
The Journal Club meets once per month, four times per semester. All psychology majors and minors are encouraged to participate. There are no annual dues.
Psych/Soc Society
The Psych/Soc Society is an organization open to all Psychology and Sociology majors and minors. This mission of the organization is to make students aware of issues in psychology and sociology. Activities include speakers, field trips, fund-raising, and social and service events. Annual dues are $7.
Psi Chi
Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology. It was founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate students who major in psychology and meet the minimal requirements. Annual dues are currently $25.
K.I.D.S: Koncerned Individuals Dedicated to Students
KIDS is similar to a "big brother" or "big sister" organization. Members pair up with an elementary school student and communicate with that student at least twice per month.
The American Psychological Society
The APS is a professional organization of academic psychologists.
The American Psychological Association
The "oldest" organization of professional psychologists. The APA has 49 divisions that range from general psychology to clinical psychology to sports psychology to gay/lesbian issues. You can access the APA MONITOR, the official newspaper of the association, access links to a variety of psychology resources, locate important research in the APA Journals, and get information about jobs/internships/fellowships. They even have a special page devoted to issues important to Undergraduate Students!!
The Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR)
The members of this organization are interested in what the body can tell us about behavior, information processing, and psychopathology. These researchers relate brain activity (measured via EEG, PET, MRI, CAT), eye movements, blinks, head movements, heart rate, blood pressure, muscle movement/tension, etc. to psychological events.
The American Sociological Association
A professional association that promotes research, publication and teaching in Sociology in the United States.
