Brian Lanier

Dr. Brian Lanier

Assistant Professor - Voice and Choral Music Education

Dr. Lanier is Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and is conductor for the University Chorale and Madraliers/ Celebration. He teaches methods for secondary vocal music, choral literature for secondary schools, graduate and undergraduate choral conducting, graduate music education courses, and studio voice. He also volunteers research and instructional time in local school music programs.  Additional research interests are in the area of conducting pedagogy.

He holds degrees from Stetson University (BME), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MM in Choral Conducting) , and Florida State University (Ph.D in Music Education). Prior to his appointment at Northwest, he taught secondary vocal music for sixteen years and served as Chairman of the Performing Arts Department at Cypress Creek High School (Orlando, FL) where led the development and expansion of the program from three teachers to eight. Under his direction, more than three hundred singers participated in choral ensembles, show choirs, and musical theatre.

For twelve years he was Chorus Master for The Orlando Opera Company and Musical Director for The Camerata Chorus. During this period, he conducted operas, prepared choristers for more than thirty main stage productions, and appeared as a guest conductor for The Florida Symphony Orchestra and The Orlando Philharmonic. Choirs under his direction have performed for the Florida Music Educators Association, Florida ACDA, and the Missouri Music Educators Association.

He has led concert tours to parts of the United States and overseas, with performances in England, France, Austria, Germany, and Hungary. He has been musical director/producer for more than twenty full-length shows, numerous musical revues, and was musical director/conductor for the University's 2004 presentation of “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.”

Since coming to Northwest, he has maintained a steady schedule of appearances as a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and advisor for many musical groups and events. He is the College and University Repertoire and Standards chair for The Missouri Choral Directors Association.
