Assistant Professor - Instrumental Music Education and Director of Bands and Orchestra

Carl A. Kling joined Northwest Missouri State University as Director of Bands in 2004. In that capacity, he conducts the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and the "Musical Pride of Northwest" Bearcat Marching Band. He serves as the faculty advisor and administrator of the Northwest Pep Band and is the Co-Conductor of the Northwest Orchestra. In addition to these performance ensembles, Mr. Kling teaches Elements of Conducting, Instrumental Conducting, Instrumental Composition and Arranging, and Marching Band Techniques. He is the sponsor of the Kappa Delta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and a member of the Upsilon Chi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Mr. Kling holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Texas Wesleyan University (1991) and a Master of Arts - Wind Conducting from Stephen F. Austin State University (1993). Most recently he has completed course work and is currently in the final year of the Doctor of Music - Wind Conducting program at Indiana University. Prior to his appointment to Northwest Missouri State, Mr. Kling served as a public school band director from 1994-2001 in the North Central Region of Texas. Additionally, he has served on the faculties of Depauw University (Ind.), Texas Wesleyan University, and Hill College (Tex.) as a guest conductor and guest lecturer. Most recently, Mr. Kling has been named to Who’s Who in America 2006 and was presented with the Kappa Kappa Psi Silver Baton Award for dedication to band.
As an active clinician, he has worked with top concert and marching ensembles in Indiana, Kentucky and Texas. Mr. Kling will serve as the guest conductor for the Northeast Missouri District Honor Band in January, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst Honor Band in February. Mr. Kling holds professional memberships in College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Kansas Music Educators Association, Iowa Music Educators Association, Nebraska Music Educators Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, and Music Educators National Conference. He is a research associate for the series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, Volumes 5 and 6.
