Her DMA degree, from UNC-Greensboro, is in Flute Performance with a double minor in Music History and Music Theory.

Originally from New York, she honors the privilege of studying with world-class flutists Marcel Moyse, Samuel Baron, and Harold Bennett, in addition to master class performances under Julius Baker, Thomas Nyfenger, Jeanne Baxstresser, and others.   She freelanced in the New York area, primarily in orchestral and chamber music ensembles, before returning to graduate school for the doctoral degree. Her primary touring and recording credits are with the new music ensemble Lothlorien, heard internationally on public radio, and with her husband, harpist Jim Palmer, as the Zephyr Flute & Harp Duo. She has played recitals and taught master classes from Maine to New Mexico and presented papers and appeared on panels for the National Flute Association, Amherst Early Music Festival, the Mid-Atlantic College Music Society Conference, and regional flute associations.

She is President of the Kansas City Flute Association, and served the National Flute Association (NFA) as Local Chair for the 2008 Annual Convention, attracting more than 3,000 flutists to Kansas City.  She is a member of the NFA Pedagogy Committee and contributor to Selected Flute Repertoire and Studies: A Graded Guide.  Her articles have been published in the NACWPI Journal (National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors), Flute Talk, the North Carolina Music Educator, the Music Educators Journal, the Journal of the American Harp Association, and newsletters for local flute clubs from New Hampshire to Colorado. She has adjudicated for all levels of solo festivals sponsored by MMEA, MENC, NYSSMA, Carolina Band Festival, Suffolk County Mentathalon, and others.

Dr. Dunnell’s research interests focus on the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto, K.299, and women in music. She has pursued research on these topics in the British Library (London) and the Archives Nationales (Paris).
