Assistant Professor of General Music Education and Horn

Vincent Bates teaches horn, music education methods, and music appreciation at Northwest. Previously, he taught K-12 music (band, choir, and general music) for 12 years in Eureka, Utah, and served as an adjunct professor of horn and music education at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. He has completed degrees at Brigham Young University (BM in Music Education and MM in Orchestral Conducting) and the University of Arizona (PhD in Music Education).
Vince enjoys research in music education philosophy and sociology and collaborates with local teachers integrating music in the elementary classroom. He is an active member of professional associations, including the MayDay Group, where he writes an e-column, Music Education as Praxis, and MENC, where he serves as chair-elect of the Gender SRIG (Special Research Interest Group) and edits the GRIME (Gender Research in Music Education) newsletter. Vince lives in Maryville with his wife, Kristin, and three children. (Link to Dr. Bates' website.)
