"Students come to Northwest from all over; many from very far away, but it doesn't take long to feel a part of the family atmosphere here. As a new Freshman, I was extremely intimidated by almost everyone. I quickly learned that people at Northwest care about each other and there really was no need for me to be intimidated. The faculty here really care about us as people, not just as students! I feel very lucky to be here."
"This is a great place to grow musically! The faculty is incredible -- they have expertise in so many different areas! They are all great teachers and they also conduct, compose, publish and perform. They are always willing to help and really want us to be successful. I particularly appreciate the positive attitudes that they display.
The word is out about our great education! If we want a teaching job, with a degree from Northwest, we’ll get one! That's well-known, but some of you might not know that some of our graduates have gone into other things such as professional performance: one sang with the San Francisco Opera; another with the Glimmerglass Opera on the east coast and Central City Opera out west! We have graduates performing with the Air Force Band, composing, arranging and even owning their own publishing companies! Many have earned advanced degrees, in performance as well as in education."
"A lot of us came here because of all the performing opportunities. Even a talented Freshmen can make the major groups! You don’t have to be a music major to be in them either! AND, you can be in several ensembles at the same time! A vocalist can be in University Chorale, audition for Tower Choir and Celebration and if you're selected, be in all! The same is true for instrumental music; a talented player can be in Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble and Wind Symphony all at the same time! Some students even perform in both vocal and instrumental groups every semester!
Northwest is on the cutting edge. Students living in every residence hall room are issued a notebook computer, and technology is integrated into the classroom. In the music department, it's vital in a number of courses."
