Dear Colleague:
The 41st ANNUAL MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Northwest Missouri State University, will be held on THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2012.
Nearly 350 students from 30 schools participating in the 2011 Olympiad. Students came from Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa. Our university and department are proud to have the opportunity to serve area schools and students through the Olympiad again this year.Enclosed you will find a packet containing the rules governing the Olympiad, a schedule for the day and a map of the campus. These items can be found on the department website also.
To help us be best prepared, we prefer that you register online by 5 p.m. on March 11, 2012. If you are unable to register before that, you may do so at the registration desk the day of the Olympiad.
We are pleased to have Dr.Marilyn P. Carlson as our guest speaker this year. Dr. Carlson was raised in a small farming community in Missouri and attended the University of Central Missouri where she received degrees in mathematics and physical education. She taught high school mathematics for three years before returning to complete her master's in computer science and PhD in mathematics education at the University of Kansas.She was Director of First Year Mathematics at Kansas University and also atArizona State University. She is currently a professor in the School ofMathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University. She has published over 40 research articles about student learning of key ideas of precalculus and beginning calculus and has recently developed professional development materials to support secondary mathematics teachers in implementing ideas and mathematical practices being called for in the Common Core Standards.Dr. Carlson has received over $20 M in funding from the National ScienceFoundation for her research and outreach work with teachers. Her current NSFgrant, Project Pathways, is working in over 20 secondary schools in Arizona to support them in implementing theCommon Core Standards. She was the Coordinator of the MAA Special InterestGroup for Research in Mathematics Education, and edited the MAA Volume, Making the Connection: Research to Practice in Mathematics Education. In 2007 she received the MAA Selden Award forResearch in Undergraduate Mathematics Education. She is in the University ofCentral Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame.
