Welcome to the Department of Mass Communication
Students involved in Northwest's Department of Mass Communication say they are confident they made the correct decision when it came to choosing the right college for them. The department has a friendly atmosphere and allows plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience. Many students begin working on the publications and broadcast outlets during their first year. Students say the friendly faculty members and unlimited opportunities for experience are what most attracted them to Northwest.
For those students interested in finding their own niche in the country's vast media environment, the Department of Mass Communication offers full academic coverage of all things media. Northwest has two radio stations, a recording studio and facilities, a television station and a video production unit for students interested in broadcasting. In the multimedia journalism realm, Northwest offers a weekly newspaper, a converged online news site, a yearbook with DVD supplement and a regional online arts and entertainment magazine. These publications and broadcast outlets have a long history of award-winning coverage.
Writing skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum. Students benefit from a coaching style of instruction in the classroom and from dedicated advisers at the student media outlets. In addition, the department's four-year plans and caring advisers help students to successfully navigate their academic career at Northwest. The department also offers a variety of summer courses including an expanding list of online offerings.
