Susan Myllykangas

Susan Myllykangas is a fourth year Assistant Professor in the HPERD Department at Northwest Missouri State University. She has over 24 years of work experience in the field of therapeutic recreation, her primary area of teaching. She is a nationally Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and has worked with participants of all ages and disabilities. Dr. Myllykangas has a Master's degree in gerontology and a Ph.D. in Leisure Behavior. Her research interests include: the meaning of leisure, older adults, caregivers, HIV/AIDS, and the use of leisure to facilitate closure at the end of life. With extensive training in online pedagogy she has developed a number of distance education courses in recreation and gerontology. Dr. Myllykangas has twice been awarded the Recreation Instructor of the Year award from the students and a Teacher of the Year award from the Delta Zeta sorority.

Educational Background: Ph.D. from Indiana University and an M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado.
