Abilities Laboratory

The Abilities Laboratory is an auxiliary agent of the Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Department at Northwest Missouri State University. It serves as both a student resource/learning center and as a community service program. It provides students, faculty, staff, and the northwest Missouri community in general with facilities, equipment, testing and prescription services to examine human ability and disability. As a part of its services, the Abilities Laboratory, also provides students and the community with both "out reach" and "in-house" leisure and or recreation education activity programs. These programs are designed to both give students "hands on experience" in human service and to provide opportunities for individuals and or groups from the northwest Missouri community to participate in a variety of student lead recreation education and leisure experiences, regardless of age, experience, or ability. The Abilities Laboratory is located on the Northwest Missouri State University Campus, in the lower level of the Lamkin Activity center, room 049. Current student learning opportunities include:

  1. Therapeutic Recreation programming and curricula material.
  2. Adaptive/Special Physical Education curricula material.
  3. Adaptive and assistive recreation and sports equipment.
  4. Internship and fieldwork data bases.
  5. Research projects and professional presentation networks.
  6. Independent study projects and publication networks.
  7. Conferences and workshops.

Current student service opportunities include:

  1. "In-House Programs"
    1. Support/leadership of the Medically Restricted Activity Class.
    2. Support/assist with the lab portions of the Adaptive/Special Physical Education Class and or the lab portions of the Therapeutic Recreation Curriculum.
    3. Support/leadership/assist with Special Events.
    4. Therapeutic Recreation and Adaptive/Special Physical Education Independent Study/Mentoring.
  2. "Out Reach Programs"
    1. Therapeutic Programs for children with learning disabilities and or behavior disorders.
    2. Camping and after School Recreation and Education Program for school aged Children and Youth with and without disabilities.
    3. Fitness/Wellness Program for adults with disabilities.

Current student (work study and or volunteer) positions include:

  1. Abilities Laboratory Technician - work the afore mentioned "In-house" and or "out reach" activity programs.
  2. Intern/Fieldwork Student - work at an approved fieldwork or internship site (in or out of Missouri).
