Scholarships

The Department of History, Humanities, Philosophy and Political Science offers numerous scholarships each year to new and continuing undergraduate students, including several for first-time freshmen. Incoming Freshman Scholarships

First-time Freshman Scholarship
Student must be a history, humanities, philosophy, political science or social science major and a first time freshman. Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours.

History Day Scholarship
This departmental scholarship is provided by the University for winners in the Senior Division History Day. Students must enroll at Northwest Missouri State University as a history or social science major during his or her freshman academic year. Cannot be awarded until the state contest winners are announced. Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Alice Corley Scholarship
This scholarship in memory of Alice Wheeler Houston Corley, mother of Professor Emeritus Roger Corley, has been made available by her family and friends. It was first awarded in the fall of 1985. Eligibility: entering freshman who is a prospective history, social science, or pre-law major, preferably one who shows promise in the Ulman Scholar competition. Recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours each semester.

History and Social Science Scholarships

George R. Gayler Scholarship
This scholarship has been established by George Gayler, a Professor Emeritus of History at Northwest for many years. It was first awarded in 1993. Applicants must be a declared sophomore, junior, or senior in the area of history or social science, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours each semester.

John L. Harr Scholarship
This scholarship has been made available by faculty, friends, and family in honor of the late Professor Emeritus John Harr, long-time Chairman of the History Department. It was first awarded in 1979. To be considered, a student must be a history/social science major/minor, have a 3.0 GPA, be a junior or senior, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours each semester.

Clarence Henderson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Clarence Henderson, Professor of History. It has been made available by his wife and friends. It was first awarded in 1975. Applicants must have a history major or minor, a 2.5 cumulative GPA, have junior or senior standing, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours.

James Hurst Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of James Hurst, Assistant Professor of History, by his family and friends. It was first awarded in 1992. Applicants must be a history or social science major, and have a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

The Robert Killingsworth Scholarship
This scholarship, in memory of Robert Killingsworth, Professor of History, has been made available by his wife and friends. It was first awarded in 1981. To be eligible, a student must be a history major or minor, have a 2.5 cumulative GPA, be a junior or senior, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours.

Edward P. Morgan Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Edward P. Morgan, a former member of the Missouri Supreme Court. It was first awarded as a medal to the senior history major with the highest GPA, but was converted to a monetary award in the fall of 1995. Applicants must be a history or social science major, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have senior standing, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours each semester.

Nodaway County Historical Society Scholarship in Public History
This scholarship was established by the Nodaway County Historical Society to help students in their study of public history. It was first awarded in 2002. Recipients must be a public history minor or have expressed interest in public history, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours. Preference is given to Missouri residents to promote the awareness of public history in the state.

The Mahalla Saville Scholarships
These scholarships were established by Mahalla Saville in 1971. Miss Saville, a native of Worth County, Missouri, attended the Laboratory School in the early years of Northwest's development. In addition to being a history or social science major with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, and enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours, a candidate for this scholarship has the additional requirement of participating in the collection, presentation, and/or dissemination of the history and culture of the State of Missouri and particularly of the northwest Missouri region.

The Leslie Noél Swaney Scholarship
This scholarship, in memory of Leslie Noél Swaney, an honors graduate in history from Northwest, has been made available by his family. It was first awarded in 1971. To be eligible, the student must be a history major, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, be a junior or senior, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours.

Henry and Mary Turner Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Henry and Mary Turner to help students in their study of history. It was first awarded in 1989. Recipients must be a history or social science major, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 academic hours.

Phi Alpha Theta Award
Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honorary Society, presents this award to its graduating senior member with the highest grade point academic record in the area of history.

Philosophy Scholarships

The Harriet and Bill Swineford - Philosophy Scholarship
This scholarship established by the family of Harriet and Bill Swineford, serves to promote and develop philosophical thought and research at Northwest. The scholarship is awarded to the philosophy major (or majors) enrolled as a full-time student, who having completed at least twelve hours of philosophy has the highest GPA overall and in the field of philosophy.

The Phi Sigma Tau Award
The award recognizes the graduating senior in philosophy who has achieved outstanding scholarship in the field by obtaining a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, and who embodies the aims and purposes of Phi Sigma Tau in campus life and service.

Political Science Scholarships

H.F. "Hoot" Holland Memorial Scholarship
The H.F. "Hoot" Holland Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a political science major from Nodaway or Worth county. If qualified candidates from these counties are not available, other candidates will be given consideration. Available to prospective juniors and seniors, the award is made on the basis of need and academic standing.

Dr. Jerry Brekke Scholarship in Political Science
This scholarship is awarded to prospective junior and senior majors in Political Science. Qualified candidates must be active in departmental student organizations and have demonstrated serious academic application to both University and departmental coursework.
