Listen! Dr. Frucht on the the department (MP3, 621KB)

Dr. Richard Frucht joined the Northwest faculty in 1980 after completing his Ph.D. at Indiana University. A native of New York, Dr. Frucht received his undergraduate training at Baylor University.

While at Indiana, he was a Fulbright scholar to Romania, spending a year conducting research in his area of specialty. Dr. Frucht is the author of four books on East European history; his The Encyclopedia of East Europe: From the Congress of Vienna to the Fall of Communism (Garland, 2000), was named one of the best books of the year by Choice, Library Journal, and Booklist in 2001 and his latest is Eastern Europe: An Introduction to the Peoples, Land, and Culture (3 volumes), published by ABC Clio in 2005. He has also contributed numerous articles to various books and journals and was the national director of the American Association of Slavic Studies' Public Education Project in the early 1990s and the civilian director at the West Point summer workshop on military history.

Despite the gratifying reviews of the books and the professional opportunities, Dr. Frucht has always most enjoyed teaching, and he was named favorite professor by various student groups and the campus at large on numerous occasions. Every few years he leads a Northwest tour to such places as Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Greece, France, and Egypt.
