Richard Field received an M.A. from Michigan State University in 1981, and a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1987. He taught Philosophy at Southern Illinois University, University of Minnesota at Duluth, and Western Kentucky University before coming to Northwest in 1993.
He has authored various articles and presentations on such topics as the philosophies of René Descartes, St. Thomas Aquinas, and John Dewey. He has also served for a number of years as a research consultant to the John Dewey correspondence project being conducted by the Center for Dewey Studies at Southern Illinois University.
Dr. Field has for many years been the faculty advisor of the Philosophy Club / Phi Sigma Tau, a club open to any students who wish to help promote philosophy at Northwest. Over the years the Philosophy Club has sponsored many events on campus on such topics as the existence of God, the teaching of evolutionary theory vs. creationism in our schools, and the ethics of stem cell research. The Philosophy Club also serves as the local chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the international honor society in philosophy.
Dr. Field is the proud father of a son, Max, with whom he comfortably resides along with two cats and a dog.
