The O.R. Grawe Award, named in honor of Oliver Rudolph Grawe, first President of the Association of Missouri Geologists, is presented annually to the outstanding Junior or Senior undergraduate Geology major in Missouri. The award consists of a Brunton pocket transit and case, a plaque and certificate of recognition from the Association, and expenses for attending the annual meeting and field trip of the Association.
The winning applicant is selected on the basis of a letter of nomination from the applicant's department chairperson, a written statement by the applicant describing reasons for having chosen the field of earth science and describing post-graduate plans, a current copy of the applicant's academic transcript, and letters of recommendation from two members of the department faculty.
The O.R. Grawe Award has been given to Northwest students Lonnie R. Cook (1972), John P. Pope (1995), Diana Leipard Pope (2004), and Ashley M. Leger (2008). Retired professor Richard M. Felton received the award in 1977 as an undergraduate at UMKC. Geology professor Dr. Aaron W. Johnson received the award in 1997 as an undergraduate at Missouri State University. Dr. John P. Pope, the 1995 Northwest recipient is currently a professor of geology at Northwest.
Ashley M. Leger graduated in 2005 from Burke High School in Omaha, NE. She is currently a Senior geology concentration major who will graduate in Spring 2009. Ashley is a member and officer of Geo Club, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon National Earth Science Society. She is also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Society and Cardinal Key. She has held many student positions in the Department of Geology/Geography including faculty office assistant, lecture assistant, lab assistant and assistant for the online Earth Science courses. In the summer of 2007, Ashley was one of two students to receive a scholarship for 2 weeks of study at the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, SD. This past summer she was one of 6 interns at the Mammoth Site and sincerely hopes to someday work there permanently. To achieve her goal, she hopes to attend the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology for graduate work culminating in a PhD.

Ming Hung, Eva Wu (from Department of Geology/Geography) and Jamie Patton (from Department of Agriculture) received an external grant of more than $40,000 to collaborate with Blackland Research and Extension Center, Texas AgriLIFE Research, Texas A&M University System. Together, they will develop a database management system to manage GIS data and integrate it into Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) model, a model developed by Texas AgriLife Research, Texas A&M System to delineate watershed units in farmlands.
