Northwest Missouri State University

The Symbol

In the 2000, the Family and Consumer Sciences department began the year with a new name and an exciting new symbol. As the years go by we anticipate many challenging opportunities, yet we continue appreciate our heritage.

In 1926 the Betty Lamp was chosen to represent home economics, symbolizing the light of the home and the light of the mind. Thus, you see the the Betty Lamp representing our heritage in the background of the symbol. Superimposed on the betty lamp and having its birth in the Betty Lamp, is a brightly burning flame, representing the new energy and vitality of the profession-our flame of the future.
