MAFCS College Scholarship

The Missouri Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (MAFCS) awards two scholarships of $500 each to two outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences students meeting specific scholarship criteria. The award is paid in two installments of $250 each, one payment at the first semester of the senior year and the second at the second semester. Payment is made directly to the college or university financial officer. The fund was established by the membership in 1953. The first award was announced in 1961. The fund has grown through fundraising projects and contributions.

The specific scholarship requirements are that the candidate shall:

be in the junior year at a Missouri college or university who expects to have senior status at a Missouri college or university during the time the scholarship funds will be used
shall have a grade point average of at least 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale
have an adequate background for entering the senior year with a Family and Consumer Science major.

Mabel Cook Alumni Scholarship

The Mabel Cook Scholarship was established by alumni, faculty and friends, following the retirement of Miss Mabel Cook as Home Economics Chairwoman in 1971. The $400 scholarship is awarded annually. To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, a student must:

Be a sophomore or junior Family and Consumer Sciences major at the time of the application.
Have an earned GPA of at least 3.00

The Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship Committee will make the scholarship selection. Consideration is given to scholarship achievement, participation in university activities, and promise as a professional.

Millennium Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a female who has elected a major in any field of Family and Consumer Sciences. Preference is given to those students enrolled in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education program. The student must have completed 30 credit hours and be classified as a sophomore, junior or senior. The recipient must have maintained a GPA of 3.2 and be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per trimester. The student needs to have demonstrated an active role in University and/or Department organizations and activities. The scholarship is renewable upon reapplication.

FCS Ambassador Scholarships

Family and Consumer Sciences ambassadors are appointed for one year, and are awarded $525 per academic year. Eligibility criteria include:

Must be a full-time (minimum of 12 hours) student with a major in Family and Consumer Sciences
Must have completed 60 hours for the four-year majors by fall the beginning of the Fall Trimester
Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7
Must be an active member of AAFCS or KONu
Must be nominated by faculty and submit an application and two letters of recommendation.

Assignment responsibilities include: an average of one hour of service per week, approximately 25 hours per semester; available for departmental tours; correspondence, including letters to prospective students and thank-you letters and notes; bulletin boards and display cases; and assist faculty in public relations and recruitment activities.

The Ambassadors will coordinate the annual FCS Recognition Banquet and will meet at least once each semester with the FCS faculty.

FCS Scholarships for Upper-class Students

The Family and Consumer Sciences Department awards three $550 scholarships to students who will be enrolling as sophomores, juniors, or seniors the next academic year. Eligibility criteria include: must have a declared major in Family and Consumer Sciences; must have completed 12 credit hours of required classes with a 2.5 GPA and be currently enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours toward the major; must submit an application form, written statement of educational and career goals, and three letters of faculty support.

Phyllis C. Leet Freshman Scholarship

The $1,000 Phyllis C. Leet Freshman Scholarship is awarded to an entering freshman who

has maintained a high school grade point average of 3.0
has declared a major in Family and Consumer Sciences
has resided during the high school years on a farm or in a small town (under 1500 population) in the general geographic area consisting of the 19 counties in Northwest Missouri, and shows financial need.
