Student Accident and Injury Policy
Any accident or injury which occurs within the University community will be handled according to the following steps:
- Medical Attention
- Reporting of Accident/Injury
- Financial Responsibility
Medical Attention
- Secure prompt medical attention as follows, depending on the urgency of the case and the patient's wishes.
- First Aid (first aid boxes are in all buildings)
- Student Health Service
- Physician's Office
- Hospital Emergency Room
- Secure transportation
- Ambulance - emergency only
- Campus Safety-Campus Safety will transport non-work related, injured or ill students from the Student Health Services location on campus to and from the hospital or doctor's office upon request from the Wellness Center, provided there is no other means of transportation available to the student (i.e., personal vehicle, friend, parent, etc.).
Reporting of Non-Work Related Accidents/Injuries
- Report immediately to person in charge (teacher, R.A., hall director, etc.).
- Person in charge will report immediately to Campus Safety.
- Campus Safety will investigate and complete a case report form, which will be sent to the Controller's Office.
Financial Responsibility
- Medical expenses are the initial responsibility of the injured party (excluding accidents/injuries covered by worker's compensation).
- The individual files the claim with their health insurance company (unless another party was responsible for the accident or injury; then file with the "other party's insurance company).
- To determine liability on the part of the University, the Controller's Office will file the claim with the State of Missouri. The state office will make a determination and contact the injured party directly by letter.
- For any questions concerning the claims process, contact the Controller's Office, extension 1101.
