Over 100 students are currently studying in the English Department at Northwest. The Department offers the following undergraduate degree programs:
The Bachelor of Arts in English (a 30-hour program) provides a wide-range of writing and literary experiences and involves students in the liberal-arts tradition. The major, which is balanced between courses in advanced writing and literature, is excellent preparation for the study of law, business and medicine, as well as for careers in teaching, publishing, writing, advertising and journalism, and for management and other positions requiring interpretive, diagnostic and analytic problem-solving abilities. See the course requirements.
The Bachelor of Science in English (a 36-hour program) provides extensive writing experience and familiarity with editing and research skills. The degree program was established in response to the proliferation of desktop and small publishing companies, technical writing centers and in-house magazines and journals. This major offers preparation for careers in the fields of publishing and technical writing, as well as for the study of law, business and medicine. See the course requirements.
The Bachelor of Science in Education in English (a 37-hour program) and the Comprehensive Bachelor of Science in Education in English (a 55-hour program) prepare teachers of English. Both degree programs provide extensive writing experience, familiarity with the full range of American and British literature, knowledge of traditional and modern grammars, rhetorical theory and history of the English language. The B.S.Ed. in English requires a minor. The Comprehensive B.S.Ed. in English does not require a minor. Either major, when completed with the requirements of the B.S.Ed. Secondary Program, meets Missouri secondary school English teaching certification standards. See the course requirements.
The Minor in Writing (a 24-hour program) is a useful complement to any major. Students who wish to improve their abilities of written expression or who wish to further explore the possibilities for how writing is used in their major field of study should consider this minor. The minor includes mass communication electives and a range of advanced-study opportunities in creative writing, technical writing, popular media and language. See the course requirements.
The Minor in English (a 24-hour program) enhances students’ analytic and communicative skills and prepares them for careers involving writing and editing, as well as for other positions requiring interpretive, diagnostic and analytic problem-solving abilities. See the course requirements.
The Minor in English (a 31-hour program) is an attractive choice for students majoring in another teaching area such as social science, a foreign language, speech, art or music. This minor offers a balance of writing and literature courses similar to the Bachelor of Arts in English and, when completed with the B.S.Ed. Secondary Program, meets Missouri secondary school English teaching certification standards. See the course requirements.
