About the Bachelor of Science Degree

The B.S. doesn't have a specific primary purpose, since it has a wide range of uses. Generally, the B.S. student will become adept at written communication. The benefits of such study provide the student with a set of skills that no other field can offer. English majors are dynamic -- they learn to create, analyze, synthesize, construct, and deconstruct all forms of writing. As such, English majors make excellent information and communications managers. They are highly adaptable, so any field is open to them. An English degree makes an excellent pre-professional degree, not only for the reasons listed above, but also because the major requires a great deal of research. That training allows English majors to lap non-English-major law and med students. Other focuses for the major include creative and technical writing, areas which are in a serious state of growth at Northwest.

The requirements for the 37-hour Bachelor of Science in English provide a course balance of advanced writing and literature that is excellent preparation for the study of law, business, medicine; for careers in teaching, research, publishing, editing, advertising, journalism, technical writing and free-lance writing; and for management and other leadership positions requiring interpretive, diagnostic, and analytical problem-solving abilities.
