Our General Education Writing Program

Because we value the role writing can play in students’ learning and everyday lives, every faculty member in our department teaches general education writing classes. We are dedicated to making the experience challenging and relevant to students, and are committed to helping students become more conscientious writers and readers.

After completing English 111 and 112 or English 115, students should demonstrate:

a thorough understanding of the writing process, including topic selection, drafting, revising, and editing
progress in reading and analyzing a variety of source material
an ability to read peer writing and their own writing with critical intelligence and to provide useful feedback
the ability to organize coherent short essays, particularly a thesis-driven argument
an understanding of basic paragraph structure and the ability to write clear, coherent sentences
college-level usage of conventional English grammar and mechanics
college-level competency in finding, evaluating, incorporating, and documenting sources in a research paper
competence in avoiding unintentional plagiarism and a commitment to academic honesty.
