Northwest Missouri State University

About Us

With 22 full time faculty, over half with terminal degrees, the department of English is the largest department at Northwest.

The department supports a small press, GreenTower Press, which publishes a highly lauded literary magazine, The Laurel Review. Other publishing endeavors associated with the English department include Teaching Cather, a magazine dedicated to promoting and improving the teaching of the works of Willa Cather; New Wine, a collection of the best in regional high school literary creativity; Lynx, a regional (and growing) literary magazine devoted to women's issues; and Medium Weight Forks, a local literary magazine with an open format.

Our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, is sponsored by the department with Ms. Brenda Ryan currently serving as the faculty coordinator. Northwest has been proud each year to send a large contingent from our chapter to show off scholarship (and win awards) at the annual Sigma Tau Delta conference.

Every year the Northwest English Department brings four nationally known writers to campus in the Visiting Writers Series. For example, in the fall of 2006 Robert Hass, a former poet laureate, presented his poetry to a large crowd in the Charles Johnson theater
