Speech & Theatre Education

This major meets Missouri certification standards for grades 9-12 and is designed for students who want to teach speech and/or theatre at the high school level, and/or direct theatre programs and coach forensics teams. This degree provides you with the background necessary for professional theatre, communication training and graduate school. Often, graduates with a B.S.Ed. continue to perform, do technical work, or pursue graduate study and teach and direct at the college level. Many program options are available, one of which leads to certification in speech/theatre as well as a second area of your choice, like Math, English, or Modern Language. Majors and Minors

The B.S.Ed. Comprehensive Major in Speech/Theatre (60 hours) prepares students to teach theatre and speech, to direct productions in secondary schools, and to coach speech/debate teams. This major does not require a minor and, when completed under the B.S.Ed. Secondary degree program, meets the teacher certification standards in Missouri for speech/theatre secondary level.

The B.S.Ed. Major in Speech/Theatre (36 hours) which does require a minor applicable to the B.S.Ed. degree program, when completed under the B.S.Ed. Sec. degree program, meets teacher certification standards in Missouri for speech/theatre secondary level.

A B.S.Ed. Minor in Speech/Theatre (30 hours) is available to students majoring in another secondary-level teaching area. This minor, when completed under the B.S.Ed. Sec. degree program, meets teacher certification standards in Missouri for speech/theatre secondary level.

The department also offers endorsement for students seeking Missouri Middle School Certification, grades 5-9, in Speech/Theatre. Advisement for Middle School Certification is provided by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Human Services.
